Quick tips to keep YOU healthy, sane, and productive all week long.

 half shot in greenGreetings!

A couple of weeks ago, John and I got up at 4am and. from our backyard, watched the space shuttle launch. Even from 30 miles away, it was a spectacular sight. And, last night, the sonic boom of its return reminded us to turn on the television to watch the shuttle land safely.

Back when I was a kid, there were many that believed that we'd never get to the moon - because it hadn't been done before. Then, in 1969, when Neil Armstrong took those first steps onto the lunar surface, it all became possible.

It seems that no matter how "put together" we are, most of us still struggle with some aspect of our lives - something that just doesn't seem possible. Thinking, perhaps, that we'll NEVER lose weight, NEVER be able to quit smoking...or maybe we have more positive thoughts about something we want to do - like write a book, start a business, end a destructive relationship - but we don't get anywhere. There's never enough time or the right time.

Since our beliefs become our thoughts, and our thoughts become our actions, checking in our core beliefs can bring about dramatic and rewarding changes. In my speaking program, "Getting Unstuck from the Inside Out", we ask ourselves three simple questions. You may be surprised at your answers. They may be your key to a happier and healthier life. This is an excellent program for Women's Groups and Health Conferences. Do you know of any groups with upcoming programs? Would you introduce me? If I get booked, you'll earn yourself a $250 referral fee!

Have a great week!

Eat In:

Dainty Dishes for a Dainty You!

People are surprised when I tell them I eat brownies and ice cream every day. They think, "Oh, she must be one of those 'lucky' few that can eat anything she wants." Hardly!

As someone who has lost weight and kept it off - and interviewed other successful weight maintainers, I feel that "No Deprivation" is a key to success. As I discuss in my book, Dr. Jo's No Big Deal Diet, most people who lose weight and keep it off, have learned how to include their favorite foods into a healthy diet.

Some people allow themselves a generous portion of their favorite decadent dish once a week. There's no way I can hold out that long - I want them everyday!

So, when I make brownies in an 8X8" pan, I cut them into 30 pieces! Most days I have one piece only - sometimes I feel like two. And, when I enjoy my favorite chocolate chip ice cream, it's in an espresso cup. Whether you enjoy your favorites once a week - or every day, don't ever feel like you have to give up everything to get and stay lean.
Eat Out:
Outback Steakhouse

There's a relatively new Outback Steakhouse around the corner, so I decided to check out their nutritional information so I can be prepared the next time I visit. Here's what I found:
  • Appetizers - I'm going to skip this. The Bloomin' Onion has 1560 calories (without the sauce). The small Seared Ahi Tuna has 325 calories, but I'll save my calories for the steak.
  • Soups & Salads - Wow! The Queensland Salad (without the dressing) has 860 calories. Figure on at 1057-1432 calories with the dressing. The Onion or Cream of Broccoli Soup has just about 300 calories per cup (not bowl). The House salad has 311-500 calories.
  • Outback Favorites - The Grilled Chicken on the Barbie is just 444 calories though I'll probably go for the 7oz Victoria's Filet for 587 calories.
  • Sides - Best bets are the veggies. Fresh Steamed Green Beans are 229 calories (request "no butter" and you'll be at 129). Fresh Seasonal Veggies are just 54 without the seasoned butter - another 100 calories, if you don't make this special request.
Speed Up:
With a Clean House

In my program, "Eat, Play, Laugh" I discuss the importance of playing every day. Some people call it exercise, but I prefer to think of it as fun. That's why I dance (John and I just signed up for a Lindy Hop class).

Think you don't have time? At a recent speaking event, a woman shared how she fits in her exercise - and makes it fun. She told me, "With four kids, I really don't have any time to myself and no time to go to the gym, so I came up with this idea of turning my housecleaning 'chore' into something fun."

"So, I bought myself an apron from the hardware store...the one with all the pockets for tools. I filled them with all my cleaning supplies - sprays, cleaning rags, and such.  Then, I turn up the stereo real loud and, starting in one corner of the room and moving in one direction only, I clean everything - pulling out the dusting rag when I reach furniture, the Windex when I reach glass, dusting the baseboards - everything! The key is never to retrace your steps. I've discovered that the faster the tempo of the music, the faster I can clean the whole house! How's that for a unique idea to "play"? Do you have another unique way to burn a few extra calories? Email me and let me know.
Slow Down:
Peace and Quiet

Most of us live in a world of constant noise. You watch TV as you get ready for work. There are dogs barking next door. You get in your car, turn up the radio, but the car driving next to you has their stereo so loud that you can feel the bass in your chest. When you get to work there are ringing phones, people to talk to, meetings to attend...

No wonder we're all stressed! It helps to find a bit of peace and quiet every day. I go to yoga class a few times a week for my de-stressing. Someone told me, on the way home from work, he stops at a local park to talk a brief walk. One woman told me she pulls the car into garage at the end of his work day, and just sits in the car for 10 minutes - breathing...getting ready for the night ahead - making dinner, helping the kids with homework, etc.

Where do you find your peace and quiet? Send me an email and tell me.
