Just recently a colleague asked me how she, too, could get involved in media work. Because of her education and experience, she felt that she would be great at representing those companies with healthier food products on TV and radio.
Here were my top six tips (how many do you have - or are you willing to do?)
- Make yourself known to key PR people. If you don't know who they are, search the Internet for the "nutrition or health" managers at all the major companies. Check out their client list - do they even work with food companies?
- Send them ideas, don't just expect them to call you!
- Get known as an expert - write blogs, books, do speaking
- Get experience. No one wants to work with an unknown. Call your local TV station. And, when they book you, don't forget to ask for a copy of the interview.
- In fact, you can book the media yourself, then work on getting "sponsors" (companies
that want you to showcase their products)
- And, the #1 tip is...be an enthusiastic spokesperson.
So many very smart people are NOT appropriate for media. Their voice is so monotone that they put people to sleep. Or they use such technical words that they confuse their intended audience. Tape record yourself and ask others to give you feedback.
Or find a coach (PS I coach health professionals who want to become professional speakers and/or media spokespersons.) |
