Money Making Idea:

Becoming a Professional Speaker

Light bulb idea
Want to get paid to speak at conferences, too? Unless you have some experience at teaching, training or speaking, it's difficult to get paid until you "pay your dues." Here's a plan to get you started:

  • Join Toastmasters to improve your speaking skills
  • Volunteer to speak at meetings of all types - Chamber, Rotary, networking, women's
  • Develop your own unique topics. The more unique you are, the more you can charge
  • Write blogs, newsletters
    or articles
to develop your topics more fully - and promote yourself
  • Start charging, when you feel comfortable. Start low and build them up.

Greetings!,

Do you want to start your own business, but don't know what 2009 ADA 5K runyou want to do? Then, read the article below which discusses how business owners get their ideas.

One idea is to look at your hobbies. My speaking business developed from my love of nutrition and my hobby of speaking. I never once thought I'd get paid to speak! Do you want to be a professional speaker? Then, read the article in the left column about how to get started.

Of course, don't forget that I'm available to help you with your goals through my Build Your Business telecoaching series - or one-on-one coaching. Give me a call for your initial, complimentary 20 minute session.

Looking for Ideas for Your Business?

Do you want to start up a business - or modify the type of business you currently have, but don't know what you want to do?

Although I've been in business for myself for 20 years, it is constantly changing. Initially, my goal was just to counsel private patients. Now my business is writing, speaking, and consulting.

Frankly, I never knew I wanted to be a professional speaker until I volunteered to speak at my local Chamber luncheon during Heart Health month nearly 20 years ago. After my presentation, a woman came up to me and asked me if I presented programs to companies and I said, "Of course." (I never had, but knew I could).

That woman turned out to be in charge of the wellness programs at Compaq Computer Corporation (now, HP). That was back in the early 90's. Not only did I do regular nutrition "brown bags", but actually won the weight management program away from Weight Watchers!

So, where can you get ideas about your next business venture? A recent USAToday article shared these five sources of inspiration:
  • Previous work experience - think about previous jobs you've had. Is there something that company didn't do well? Could you do it better?
  • Hobbies - you love your hobby...could you make money doing what you love?
  • An "ah-ha" moment - pay attention. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where there was no product or service that met your need? Are there others that need this, too? Would they be willing to pay for it?
  • Someone else's work experience - what do your friends, your spouse do for a living? When you meet new people, don't just ask them what they do for a living...ask them how they could do it better if it were they're own business.
  • Systematic research - some people find a field they enjoy (or one that is just plain "hot"), then research every aspect of it, to find what needs are unmet.
Pay attention to every conversation and situation. You never know when you'll discover what your (next) business will be all about!
