Want to Raise Your Fees? Expect to Lose Some Clients! |
|
The other day a coaching client said she was interested in raising her fees, but worried that she would lose some clients. My response, "You probably will!"
But, that may be a GOOD thing!
Let's say you have a client you've worked with for years and your contract with them has expired. Perhaps you're still working with them, but charging them less than other clients (because you feared the implication of raising your fees). Are they a joy to work for - or do you regret it everytime they call with a question or a comment on your work? If you raised your fees, one of two things will happen.
They will either pay your higher fees (which might mean your difficult client not seem so bad) or they will drop you (and maybe that will be a relief).
Here's another example of why you might want to raise your fee - you attract different clients! I used to charge a couple hundred bucks to deliver a corporate brown bag seminar. If I were to market myself at that fee to deliver a keynote at national conference, they would quickly delete my proposal! At a couple of hundred bucks, they would quickly assume that I'm not good enough. Perception is often based on the fee charged.
If you're thinking about increasing your fee, be sure you are worth that higher fee AND there are clients willing to pay this fee (ask around). And, also make sure you have the experience and expertise to work with that client.
Another of my consulting clients was thinking about asking $75 for a corporate brown bag seminar. I suggested, that with her experience and expertise, that she charge $250 an hour. She asked - and she got it!
What I've noticed is that many consultants charge very little for their services, then have to work excessive hours just to pay the bills. That's a perfect formula for feeling stressed - and too exhausted to be creative. |
