    What's Your Fear?

It can be scary to start a business - or keeping it going from day-to-day. Entrepreneur magazine surveyed business owners to uncover the top five fears, then asked experts to offer suggestions. Here they are:

    1. Failure - understandable since 95 percent of all businesses fail within the first five years. Colleen Long, a psychologist who specializes in entrepreneurship, suggests keeping a written track of your successes so you realize all you have accomplished.
    2. Economic uncertainty - need I say more? Keep in mind that this can also work in your favor. According to the Entrepreneur article, "Many small businesses have started, innovated and grown during a recession. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard established Hewlett-Packard during the Great Depression; Orbitz.com went live during the dotcom bust."
    3. Being your own boss - most people recognize that there's little security in most "real" jobs, but there's even less in your own business - unless you take control. That's why it's so important to set goals for making a certain number of sales calls, spending a set amount of time on writing, etc.
    4. Consuming your life - it's common to be concerned that you're business could leave you with little time for yourself, your family and social life. Long suggests asking for help for "tasks you don't have the time or know-how for, forming a discussion group or advisory board, reaching out to peers, or taking advantage of the small-business resources available."
    5. Staying afloat - if you want to make money, you have to make sure there is a consumer need for your product. Long invites you to find out who your customers are - and listen to them. Jim Koch, a well-known entrepreneur with decades of business experience, reminds us to continue to put ourselves out there - keep promoting ourselves and our products and services.
