Money Making Idea:
Barter Your Services
Light bulb idea
I just heard from a dietitian who consults with a meal solution company where they shop, chop and pre-cook. People come into the shop and package up their meals for the week and then just pop them in the oven or freezer.

This RD works just two hours a week with the meal solution company and earns $25 an hour. Doesn't sound too good, right? That's what I thought, too.

Turns out she's a single gal and she negotiated for free meals for the entire week (valued at $150/week). Not a bad deal now, eh?

BTW Legally, all bartered trades should be handled just like a cash transactions - and reported on Schedule C, Profit or Loss from Business Form 1040.

Earlier this month, I was the closing keynoter at the Michigan Dietetics Association - speaking on "How to Make More Acai BerryDough in Dietetics." On their way out, many participants thanked me for my presentation. One person said, "Thank you for that outstanding presentation. Your program alone was worth the price of this two-day conference!"

I'll be honest. That felt real good to hear. Everyone of us, no matter if we're just starting out or have been around for years, needs to hear praise. But, more importantly, we need to keep that praise written somewhere. So, when we're feeling a bit down or lacking in self-confidence we can pull out that file and get the boost we need. I invite you to do the same with all the praise you get.

Have a productive week!

A Shot of Self-Confidence

One of the top 10 traits of "financially successful" dietitians is Self-Confidence. It's not surprising. Without a good dose of self-confidence you won't ask for appropriate fees or negotiate for more money. And, you'll be waiting for the phone to ring rather than picking up the phone and selling yourself and your services.

What can you do to improve your self-confidence?
  • Save all forms of positive feedback in a file and review them periodically. These include job evaluations, class evaluations, and things your clients, friends, and family have said to you. Think, too, about posting these on your website.
  • Stop negative self-talk. When you start beating yourself up about a few extra "umms" in your presentation or a client's question you couldn't answer, immediately shut down these thoughts off by repeating (in your head) "stop, stop, stop, stop..."
  • Stop blowing things out of proportion. A few "umms" doesn't mean the presentation wasn't outstanding. You just had a few "umms", that's all. And, nobody expects you to know everything. Next time you don't know something, just say, "I'll get back to you with an answer to that."
  • Replace with positive self-talk or affirmations such as, "I'm knowledgable about my field", "I'm comfortable in front of an audience", "I promptly follow-up on leads", or "I'm comfortable cold-calling when prospecting for business."
  • Use a coach to help you see what you do well and stop spending time looking at the negatives. Nobody is perfect!
  • Stretch yourself. If you're not comfortable in front of an audience, volunteer to speak to small groups of 4-6 people or join Toastmasters. If you're uncomfortable asking for a raise, script it out and practice it with a good friend - and ask them to play "hard to get" with their responses.
Quote of the Week

I think it's the rain we've been having for three days in a row. It's just too easy to read the news, catch up with friends...  just don't feel like working today. So this quote not only for you...it's for me, too.

"Is what you are doing, or about to be doing, leading you towards your goal."
