Stay  Focused:
 Keep Your Eyes on...

by Vernon Roberts

man with blinders

I remember a saying that came from the title to a folk song that was influential during the American Civil Rights Movement - "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize". During the civil rights movement, they felt that almost anything could be endured if you kept your eyes on the prize. Any challenge overcome, any situation worked through, any wrong turn corrected.

Every day we experience distractions in our lives that take us away from creating the life we want. Many of our plates are full with work, play, education, friends, committed relationships and children. The problem is that there is no method to the madness. We move from one fire to the next without any thought of fire prevention.  We will all spend time putting out fires but that should be the exception and not the norm.

Presenting Virtually
Presenting Virtually:
The First Three

Vernon Roberts Picture

Wow, just when you've started to feel comfortable  presenting face-to-face, the game changes. Due to the travel and budget constraints many of your meetings are being moved to a virtual platform like WebEx or Live Meeting.

Think about all the presentations that you have attended via web platform or conference call. Did you get a lot of work done multi-tasking? Would you want people mutli-tasking while you are presenting?

As a seasoned communications coach, I can tell you that success when  presenting to management takes more than just showing up and winging it, especially when that presentation is virtual. Remember that you are fighting for their attention. Your audience is probably sitting at their workstation with emails and stacks of papers at their fingertips. Even though you are on the agenda, you got to give them a reason to listen!

Are there risks when presenting to management? Sure, your reputation and perceived competence is on the line. Do you sound confident, competent, knowledgeable and approachable? Is your presentation concise and engaging?

Spending additional time preparing and practicing the first three minutes of your meeting or presentation is the secret to success. In the virtual world, the first three minutes carries more weight that in the face to face world. Without your physical presence to help engage your audience, you must wow them from the first interaction. Your success lies in the first three minutes!
