Is Your Introduction Credible? |
 |
"Hello my name is _________ , and I've been in the
business for...". Oh sorry, I dozed off for a minute. It
was right after you said something about how long
you've been in the business.
What's the purpose on an introduction anyway? It
basically tells the audience why you are there and the
value that they can expect from you. Many squander
this opportunity to make an early impact. Credibility
can be gained or lost in these first few minutes. The
faster you gain their confidence, the more open they
will be to what you have to say.
Your introduction can be even more powerful when
linked to an engaging session opening. Why,
because this is where the tone is set and where the
listeners get an opportunity to see what you've got in
store for them and why they should care. I digress,
while both your introduction and opening are critical,
let's focus on the intro and talk about the opening
another time.
When it comes to introducing yourself to your
listeners, one size does not fit all. The best
introductions that I have seen are short, simple and
kept to four or five sentences. The worst that I have
seen last a few minutes and give a general overview
of the instructor's work experience. Who are they really
talking to for all those minutes! My belief is that they
are convincing themselves that they are credible.
Credible introductions are strategic and focused. You
may have a different introduction for each and every
session that you give. Always keep the composition...

Ask Vernon |

Question:
Last week I had several participants in the classroom
that had much more experience than me. It made me
extremely nervous and I felt like I had to constantly
prove myself. How should I have handled this?
Signed,
Second guessed in the Mid-West
Dear Second Guessed,
Don't forget that you are leading the workshop
becacuse someone thinks that you can handle the
content. Never discount your own value.
What you can do is acknowledge to the class
that you have some partcipants in the room that have
a lot of experience with the content. Let the classs
know that you may ask them to comment from time to
time and then ask the "expert" participants if they
would agree
to lend their knowledge as a subject matter expert.
When you utilize the knowledgable participants, be
careful to manage your time appropriately. Stay
powerful and stay in control.
