Greetings!
Holding Yourself Accountable |
 |
I recently found myself in an Austin taxi driven by... Joe.
I listened to his story about how he and a friend were
working on a possible business venture and that it
was going to happen some day. He told me about the
different people that he met in his cab, how
successful they were and how they had accomplished
their dreams. Joe and his friend seemed to be doing
little things here and there but they weren't moving
them closer to their vision. He also lamented that he
needed to exercise but couldn't find the time.
I asked Joe what steps he was taking to make his
dream happen. As he continued the conversation, I
realized that the plan was in his head. He had not
written down a single date or any actions that he
needed to take to make his dream happen. Joe said
that my questions motivated him and that he would
get moving toward his dream. He even suggested that
I write a book about how people should hold
themselves accountable. I challenged Joe as I got out
of the cab. I gave him my card and asked him to write
down his goal and the first few steps that he would
need to take to move toward it. I said take your time
and send it when you are ready. Excitedly, Joe told me
he would send it on Saturday (in four days). I never
received anything from Joe.
Are you like Joe? Do you say things like "it will
happen someday" or "I can't seem to find the time"?
Do you ...

Build Your Own Building |
|
Have you ever said what you thought of someone
while that person was not involved in the
conversation? Honestly now! Good, bad or neutral, we
tend to make judgments of others. Trouble comes
when, in our attempt to increase our self esteem, we
tear down the accomplishments of others so that we
can feel superior. Instead of building our own building
tall, we tear down the buildings of others so that ours
seems to stand taller by comparison.
How do you measure yourself as a person? In our
highly competitive culture we've always been taught
that in order for there to be winners, there must be
losers. Conversely, if I can make someone a loser, I'll
win. The flaw in this thinking is that you spend so
much time tearing down the buildings around you that
you neglect to do any work on your own building.
Don't be side tracked by this negative behavior.
Winners set goals for themselves. They focus on their
achievements to goal and make adjustments to get
there. They realize that the journey to the goal is as
important as the achievement of the goal. They ask for
feedback from others as a means to improve and give
feedback to assist others.
Stay positive and keep positive people around you.
