When you rise in the morning and stumble into the bathroom you are about to see your biggest obstacle and your greatest asset - you. You decide how successful you will be based on the actions you choose each day. You decide each moment how much risk you are willing to accept and how much effort you will put forth to reach your full potential. You set the boundaries. Many say that others set boundaries for us, but the truth is that once we accept those boundaries, we have made a choice.

How do you maintain your interest and enthusiasm for facilitation over the years? Stretch yourself and expand your boundaries. Don’t let your role define you as an instructor or facilitator. Here are five thoughts on keeping your edge.

    1. Energy givers and detractors: When I teach, what gives me energy and what takes energy away? Make a list of the topics that bring you joy to teach and the topics that you dislike. Intentionally seek out opportunities or roles where you can deliver the topics that bring you energy and move away from the energy draining topics.

    2. Make each class different: Use participant’s personal reactions and comments to make learning points. Even though your audiences may be homogenous as it relates to job function, each participant brings knowledge and experience into the classroom that can be harnessed, by you, to create learning.

"It helps facilitators realize that effective teaching is about more than saying words out loud - it's about making the content applicable and useful and making sure the students are engaged."

Focusing on the Person in the Mirror
    Mirror man

Leading meetings, off-sites and workshops at the highest levels requires your focus, dedication, energy, and vulnerability. Many of you who facilitate at least one hundred days a year know that it is critical keep the proper perspective day after day, city after city.

To stay at your peak, you need to have a ritual of rest, relaxation and replenishment. Yes, this means taking time out for you. Your car probably gets more maintenance than you. Think of it as a regular oil change and a 30,000 mile check-up. If you don’t do the maintenance, your skills and your participants will pay the price.

Here are few thoughts to keep you going:

•Treat yourself to a massage at the airport.

•Take a class that interests you for enrichment and personal learning.

    •Do some self-improvement reading.

•Listen to a meditation or affirmation tape/cd/mp3 while you are traveling or carve out 15 minutes to do so.

•Practice reframing events to reduce stress. Turn mistakes into valuable learning experiences.

•Get a life coach. Coaching is one of the best ways to improve performance in your “life”. Many coaches offer a free session to help you test the waters. Check it out.

•Travel with materials that you can work on or read while you travel. You can’t control your travel plans but you can control your attitude.
