| Meet Downriver's Program Directors! |
Staff working behind the scenes to make your programs run!
Huron Program Director Nancy Anger:
Nancy has worked for the YWCA for over 8 years. She develops and implements programs for Huron Twp. Nancy is hands-on at her programs. She makes sure they are running smoothly and are the best programs around! So much so, that she should move to Huron Twp. because of all the time she spends at her programs! Nancy is responsible for the Huron Recreation program, Huron Kid's Zone (Before/After child care program), and Huron Preschool program. She is involved in all aspects of these programs, she also coordinates with the schools and maintenance, has a great rapport with families & staff, and is great liaison between the YWCA and Huron Twp. Nancy is married to Chris. They have four wonderful children and a dog named Bella. Nancy is a movie goer and loves popcorn. She also enjoys going to the beach, camping, quilting, and jewelry & card making.
Program Director Laura Machlik
Laura has worked with the YWCA for 11 years. She oversees the before and after child care programs located at Meridian & Parke Lane Elementary Schools. She develops the Spring Break & Summer Day Camp programs as well. Laura wears multiple hats for the YWCA-working part-time Downriver and part-time at our Northwest Branch, located in Redford. She creates flyers, updates the websites (including these newsletters), keeps attendance records for 6 Detroit Before/After child care programs, and keeps important records up-to-date for the YWCA (including memberships). She is married to Jason and has two young children, ages 2 years and the other is just 2 months!"Someday" (next summer!) she will be back enjoying sailing on Lake Erie, camping, quilting, and watching a movie without falling asleep!

Bullying, the act of willfully causing harm to others through verbal harassment (teasing and name-calling), physical assault (hitting, kicking, and biting), or social exclusion (intentionally rejecting a child from a group), used to be something parents didn't need to worry about until their child was a tween. Now it has trickled down to the youngest students. In fact, some research shows that tormenting has become even more common among 2- to 6-year-olds than among tweens and teens.
The YWCA asks that you speak with your children regarding bullying. We've have major concerns in the past and are working to develop stricter policies within our programs regarding these issues. Please help us avoid these issues by talking with your child(ren). Read more here: Bully Proof Your Child: How to deal with bullies
