A Letter from Longfellow's President | |

Dear Members and Friends,
Happy Day After Ground Hog Day! Since that cute little prescient rodent saw his shadow we'll have six more weeks of winter. But what does that mean this year with so little cold and snow? With the mildest winter in recent memory, it's been easy to get to the club so we've all lost the excuse of the weather being bad. Hopefully you're keeping your New Year's health resolutions and using the club as much as possible. It's good to keep in mind that every time you walk through the door at Longfellow, you're doing something good for yourself and for your health. As you've seen at the club, there is a lot going on at Longfellow. I hope you're enjoying seeing all the improvements being made - we certainly love the changes. We're making great progress on the Women's Locker Room as we approach the final stages and we know our female members are going to love the results. The club is energized about the upcoming Super Bowl, it should be a good one! Go Pats! And finally, the Ground Hog's predictions or not, once we get to March we know spring is just around the corner. Yours in health, Laury Hammel, President

Club Renovations Update!
| |
We've been hard at work continuing the progress of making the clubs sparkle.
- In the Women's Locker Room, we are focusing on completing two showers very soon, so there will be five showers available. Our contractors are working long hours to be able to complete the full project as soon as possible.
- We've just installed a new 55" tv in the upstairs fitness room! This tv will be dedicated to sporting events, so you'll be able to stay in touch with your favorite teams as you work out.
- Our expert painter Tony Dapaz has been busy continuing to spruce up more areas of the club. Recently he has completed painting the downstairs cardio room, the upstairs fitness room, the cafe, the new kids dressing area in the ladies locker room, and the hallway to court 8. You may have noticed that with all of this painting that there is no smell because we're using Benjamin Moore low VOC paint.
- Our dynamite tile and rug contractor John LaCava has continued to install new rug squares in the cardio room, the upstairs fitness area, and the front and back stairs to the upstairs fitness room. We think you'll love the new look - we certainly do! New furniture will be arriving soon to accent our new rugs. And this rug was installed with environmentally and people friendly adhesive, that is solvent-free, zero VOC Calculated, Alcohol and Ammonia-free, non-flammable, and has Anti-microbial Protection.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as we work hard to get all of these projects completed as quickly as we can.

Fantastic Coat Drive for Rosie's Place!
|
Thank you to everyone who has so kindly donated coats to Rosie's Place. Thus far we have collected over 180 coats and received $1600.00 from the Longfellow community. Jennifer Fortunato, a member of Longfellow's Fitness Staff and a Longfellow Personal Trainer, was the driving force behind the drive, and she made a substantial monetary contribution as well. The result has far exceeded our expectations, and again, thank you to everyone who donated.

Fitness News - What is a Foam Roller and Why Should I Use One?
|
Foam rollers offer many of the same benefits as a sports massage, without the big price tag. The roller not only stretches muscles and tendons, but it also breaks down soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue. By using your own body weight and a cylindrical foam roller, you can perform a self-massage or myofascial release, break up trigger points, and soothe tight fascia while increasing blood flow and circulation to the soft tissues.
How It Works:
The superficial fascia is a soft connective tissue located just below the skin. It wraps and connects the muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels of the body. Together, muscle and fascia make up what is called the myofascia system. For various reasons including disuse, not enough stretching, or injuries, the fascia and the underlying muscle tissue can become stuck together. This is called an adhesion and it results in restricted muscle movement. It also causes pain, soreness and reduced flexibility or range of motion.
Myofascial release is a body work technique in which a practitioner uses gentle, sustained pressure on the soft tissues while applying traction to the fascia. This technique results in softening and lengthening (release) of the fascia and breaking down scar tissue or adhesions between skin, muscles and bones.
Myofascial release has also been shown to relieve muscle and joint pain as well as improving flexibility and range of motion. Foam rollers are inexpensive, and with a bit of experimentation you can target just about any muscle group.
We can all benefit from some foam rolling so why not stop by the fitness room and learn how to use one soon!

Try TRX and Pilates Reformer at Lumina!
|
It's a New Year! Try a new Exercise!
So you are in a groove...you do your cardio, weight conditioning and an occasional yoga class. Now it's time to consider TRX Suspension Training, or Reformer, or both!
New TRX classes are beginning at Lumina (open to all Longfellow and Lumina members, and non-members).
TRX Suspension Training was developed by a Navy Seal to help keep teammates in excellent condition. The TRX Suspension Trainer consists of straps made of industrial grade nylon webbing, which are suspended from a ceiling mount or vertical frame. Hands or feet are placed at the bottom of these straps, then, working with your own body weight and gravity, specific exercises are performed to build strength, balance, coordination and core stability. TRX allows all levels of athletes to work their core, upper and lower bodies in a three-dimensional environment.
Similarly, the Pilates Reformer uses the Pilates principles of breath, pelvic placement, shoulder girdle and rib cage stabilization to strengthen the core and increase flexibility,
coordination and balance. Both TRX Suspension Training and Pilates Reformer classes are available to people of all levels of fitness, and will result in toned abs, glutes and thighs and strong backs. So what are you waiting for?!
Demos are available, just contact the Front Desk at Lumina (508-358-6022) and ask for Kathy Ney for TRX, and Kay Finn for Reformer.
