Scott & Chandra's Fall '07 Teaching Schedule & News

Greetings,
We hope that your transition into fall is
going smoothly. The junctions of the seasons
are particularly important times to pause,
reflect and adjust our lifestyle and diet to
suit the changing climate. According to
Ayurveda fall is the "child" of summer
because in the temperate parts of the
Northern Hemisphere the summer heat dries out
moisture stored in the earth from the winter
and spring rains. As this heat recedes it
creates the fall conditions characterized by
cool, windy, and dry weather.
Like the earth, our bodies love the expansion
and freedom that summer provides. As the
weather becomes cool and dry and trees begin
to drop their leaves Nature begins pulling
her energies inward in preparation for the
winter. From the Ayurvedic viewpoint we are
wise to flow with this transition by eating
nourishing, alkaline foods such as savory
vegetarian soups and porridges for a week or
so to gently ground and detoxify our bodies.
Include plenty of root vegetables, celery,
leafy greens, moderate amounts of caramelized
onion, grains such as quinoa, and legumes
like mung bean and lentils in your recipes.
Thyme and basil are wonderful fall seasonings
for soups and have a particular affinity for
supporting the health of the lungs and colon,
the primary internal organs associated with
this season.
We can enhance this transition process by
favoring yoga and meditation practices that
gradually reduce excess pitta we
retain in our bodies, minds, or hearts from
summertime. For advice about how to choose
appropriate practices you can look in the
September 2007 issue of Yoga Journal
Magazine. There is a Home Practice sequence
that I, Scott, created for this purpose in
that issue.
Above all make a commitment to slowing down,
nurturing yourself, and bringing peaceful
rhythms into your life as much as possible in
order to harmonize with the pulse of the
fall and the growing influence of vata
dosha.
On another note, Chandra is excited to
announce the launching
of Metta Journeys (www.mettajourneys.com), an
organization she has co-founded with Sarah
Powers, Janice Gates, and others, which is
dedicated
to authentic inner and outer transformation
through a revolutionary combination of
philanthropy, yoga, and adventure travel
benefiting women around the globe. Scroll to

Journeys and our upcoming trip to Rwanda in 2008.

Yoga and Ayurveda workshop with Robert Svoboda and Scott: Sthiram Sukham Asanam: Living in Rhythm with our Prana
Nov. 9-10 at One Yoga in Santa Cruz, Ca
Being in sync with the internal and external
rhythms of nature is essential to our
well-being. One of the gifts of yoga and its
sister science, ayurveda, is their ability to
engender in us a growing sensitivity to our
own prana so that we learn to move through
our lives with steadiness (sthira) and ease
(sukha).
These two Sanskrit terms are familiar to most
yoga students from an oft-quoted aphorism in
Patanjali's Yoga Sutra: sthira-sukham asanam.
This is sutra 2.46, and is most commonly
translated, "Posture (asana) [should be]
stable (sthira) and comfortable (sukha)," but
is more literally translated as "Resolutely
abide in a good space." Becoming established
in "good space," however, is only possible
when our prana is healthy. And cultivating
healthy prana is a process that extends
beyond the edge of our yoga mat into every
aspect of our daily lives. When we start
infusing our yoga practice, lifestyle, diet
and relationships with sthira and sukha, we
pave the way for a life of balance and
spiritual insight.
Join Dr. Svoboda and Scott Blossom for a
weekend of dynamic exploration, dialogue and
reflection on how we can live in rhythm with
our prana.

Settling the Body, Speech and Mind in Their Natural State with Chandra
Dec. 1st, Saturday from 1-4:30pm at Body Works in Petaluma, Ca
Realizing our luminous innate wisdom and
compassion is at the core of Buddhist and
Hindu teachings. Spiritual practices such
as yoga, pranayama, mantra and
meditation have been implemented for
thousands of years by both traditions as
skillful means for
preparing the body/mind for recognizing our
natural state. In this workshop we will learn
from the teachings of the 8th century Indian
Tantrik
master, Padmasambhava, who brought Vajrayana
Buddhism to Tibet and who gave teachings on
how to settle ones body, speech, and mind in
their natural state as a preparation to more
advanced meditation practices. This workshop will
include a balanced practice of yoga asana
(passive and active forms), pranayama,
mantra, meditation, as well as, discussion.
Some prior
yoga experience recommended.

The Power and Practice of Tantric Ritual with Robert Svoboda and Scott
Dec. 8-9 at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), San Francisco, CA
Every spiritual tradition employs rituals to
celebrate and commune with the sacred within
and without. While the practices vary widely
among different traditions, ritual has been
honored for millennia as an effective way to
focus, refine, and amplify our personal
intention for, and relationship to, spiritual
practice. Tantric ritual incorporates
elements commonly recognizable as asana
(posture), pranayama (breath control), mantra
(sonic repetition), and the iconic
representation of deities. We will utilize
these elements to align body, breath, mind,
and heart with Divinity.
In keeping with the spirit of Tantra which
means "to weave," this weekend we will weave
the practices of
hatha yoga, mantra yoga, and bhakti yoga
(yoga of devotion) with discussion of the
esoteric and psychological potency that these
practices carry for deepening the capacity
for joy and meaning on your personal path of
yoga.
