Totem Animal
The Deer

The Deer
The deer as a totem serves as a bridge between the wild and the tame. This is because the deer will often be seen on the edges of the wilderness it calls home. Deer will also venture into our roadways and gardens. When deer appears you may want to ask yourself if there is a wild streak in you that desires taming. Or, have you been too cautious lately and desire to take a walk on the wild side? Deers have acute senses, they are always on alert to keep themselves from harms way. Deer totem may appear when danger is lurking, it also serves as a reminder to be watchful and alert to potential harm.

Deers are family oriented. When deer totem shows up as a buck it could be indicator that you may have strayed from your family's teachings. It may be time to re-evaluate important family values of your youth. The fawn is representative of innocence. This totem also teaches the importance of mother and child bonding. The doe's nature is to give love and protection to her young. The fawn is a cherished member of the family. As a totem deer reminds us the responsibility of parenting. Deer totem may appear when a woman is pregnant or when a new baby arrives to help you begin establishing family traditions. The energy of deer totem is gentle and loving.

A deer totem signifies a time of blending physical and spiritual energies. When the deer appears as your guide, you might consider how you take in food since the deer is an herbivore and often reduces consumption in winter to conserve energy. If losing weight or eliminating animal fats or toxins is one of your objectives, the deer may appear as a source of encouragement. Like the deer, being more mindful of what you eat may help you achieve better health and energy.

Deer with antlers also represent spiritual attunement. The white tailed deer sheds his antlers each year, and for the first five years, he grows a larger and larger pair with an annually increasing number of points. The antlers are like antennae, sensitive to signals and external energies. When the male deer appears you may be reaching new levels of psychic awareness or developing a more spiritual outlook. Your heightened awareness could mean you'll be more easily overwhelmed by noise, commotion or tension. At the same time you can benefit from strong powers of observation and subtleties in communication. The deer can help you tune in to what is unspoken and read between the lines. Could you be gentler with someone's feelings? Or do you need to accept and acknowledge your own emotions? When the deer appears as your totem, pay attention to the simple things, clear out useless clutter and chatter, and listen to what your body, spirit, and relationships really need to grow and thrive.

Holiday Goodie Recipe

Sugar Plums
6 oz toasted slivered almonds
4 oz dried plums (prunes)
4 oz dried apricots and figs
1/4 teaspoon anise seeds
1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/4 teaspoon powdered cardamom
1/4 cup confectioners (powdered) sugar
1/4 cup honey
a good pinch of salt
1 cup course sugar
(You can find this in a bakery store, on the internet or use the coarse, colored sugar from the grocery store that's used for decorating cookies)

Toast the almonds in a dry skillet over a medium heat. Shake the pan and/or stir with a spoon until they turn a lovely golden brown. It will only take a couple of minutes. Don't burn them!

Dump the almonds in a food processor chop them up fine. Then add and chop the dried plums, apricots and figs. (You want the fruit chopped small, but not to the point where they make a
gooey mess!)

Put the anise seeds, fennel seeds and caraway seeds into the pan you used for the and toast them the same way and being careful not to burn them. Again, it will only take acouple of minutes.

Add the toasted seeds, cardamom, confectioners sugar, salt, honey in a bowl and mix together.

Form into little balls about 1 inch across. (Note: try coating your hands with sugar to keep the
gooey mixture from sticking to them. When that doesn't work anymore, just wash your hands, dry them and coat them again and go back to making balls!)

Dry the balls overnight covered lightly with a clean
tea towel or paper towels.

The next day, roll the balls in your hand to warm

them and then roll them in a bowl of course sugar to
coat them.

Pile them high on a pretty plate and

then, if there are any left, bring them out during your
Yule celebrations!

Grandmother's Advice: If making them several

days ahead of time, store them in the refrigerator.
During the Victorian days (before refrigeration), a
couple of tablespoons of brandy would be added to
the mixture as a preservative and for extra flavoring.

Our friend, Jean Haller, who owns the store "Journeys of Life" in  Pennsylvania, sent this cool picture to us.

While waiting at a Sprint store, she struck up a conversation with another customer that had very cool pictures on his phone. She thought one of these pictures would fit in  great with our newsletter.

The photographer is Professor Stan Marlin and it is from his personal "eclectic collection of all things special"!

Thanks Jean! We LOVE it!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
