Totem Animals
Animal totems offer spiritual guidance. To best understand the lessons conveyed by animals that show up in our lives, we must learn more of their instinctual behaviors, and natural habitats. Is the animal nocturnal? Does it live in the desert or the tropics? Is the animal solitary or lives in a pack? What type of diet do they eat? Answers to these questions and similar questions will give you clues as to what message is being offered.
Hummingbird Moth (Sphinx or Hawk Moths)
Amanda S and her daughter, Charley, discovered a hummingbird moth in their yard. At first they thought it was a hummingbird but with closer inspection and a little Googleing, determine it was a hummingbird moth. We plant petunias along our driveway and for 10 years these delightful little creatures have enchanted us, we wanted to share with you these wonderful little treasures.
Hummingbirds do not have striped backs. They do not usually appear to
be brown. They will not let you approach them to get a closer look. If
you believe you saw a brown, striped hummingbird, you probably saw the
perfect hummingbird look-a-like. Hummingbird moths have surprised
many people who believed that they were seeing their first hummingbird.
Although you may have to wait longer to see a hummingbird,
hummingbird moths are very interesting in their own right. Unlike most
moths, they will fly during daylight. You can see many of them at any
time of day but evening is the most productive time to watch for
hummingbird moths.

Characteristics:
Fast beating wings give it the appearance of a small hummingbird but
the moth lacks the long beak. The wings are usually transparent (like a
fly) which is another indicator that it is not a true bird. It drinks
the nectar of many kinds of flowers.

Hummingbird Moths are different from most moths as they are active during the day. This makes them a very significant totem animal. They are moths so they will allow insight into mysteries and dreams but since they are active during the day, their energy is very similar to that of butterflies.

outer exploration far beyond the ordinary. As a symbol of personal

Hummingbird moth enters our life as a messenger for change. It may take some time being alone
with ourselves to listen to hummingbird moth's gentle requests that we allow the natural
transformation of things in our lives.

Pennies From Heaven?
The
other day, I got a call from an old friend, Char, who I had not heard
from in awhile. She had been having disturbing dreams and wanted to
know what I thought they might mean. Her mother had recently died and
she was having dreams that her mother had her mouth stitched closed and
was trying to communicate but could not. I told Char, that is a pretty
literal one. Your mom is trying to communicate with you but you are not
recognizing her attempts.
Often when people die, they still hang around
for awhile to make sure their loved ones are okay with their passing.
They often try to leave us signs that they are there. Sadly, most of
these signs go unnoticed.
I asked Char if she might have been getting
some of these signs and not realizing it. She thought for a minute and
said, "You know, it is strange, but everywhere piles of pennies are
showing up. Piles on the floor, on the seat of my car, all over the
place. Not just one penny, but multiples."
"Pennies from Heaven?" I asked
"Oh,
that does sound like something my mom would do", she replied. I told
her to be open to any other signs that could be from her mom, maybe the
slight scent of her perfume in the air, her favorite old song playing
on the radio, or most importantly cold air. When spirits are around us,
it might feel like a blast of cold air, I like to call it an "arctic
hug". If a spirit is around us, it may feel like you are surrounded by
cold air. Perhaps it might be just a cold brush against your cheek.
This is spirit reaching out to you.
After my mother died, I kept
finding feathers, everywhere. I would be sitting in my car and a
feather would gently land in my lap. I found them in elevators,
outside, in my house, every day! A friend even gave me a basket of
feathers. She said she did not know why she was giving them to me, she
just felt like she should. For about two years, I was bombarded with
feathers. I know it was my mom communicating with me. Growing up, she
gave me the nickname "Princess Two Feathers" as a reference to our Native
American heritage. I treasure my feather collection- my "pennies from
heaven".
On the contrary, I don't think that animals stay for
awhile. I think they are instantly reincarnated. They have no lessons
to learn, no karma to work off. Animals are perfect by nature. If the
animal was vicious, it is their human's fault. They were abused or
taught to be vicious. The lessons are the human's, not the dog's. Yes,
pit bulls maybe more aggressive by nature than other dogs, but if you
have ever seen Tracy's dogs, you know that large "aggressive" breeds
can be just a sweet and doofy as labs. It is in how they are raised and
treated. While I don't think that animals linger, I know that it will
be a long time before we stop seeing our English pointer,Jack curling up on the couch.
He may be gone, but his spirit lives on in our hearts.
Please be
open to signs. It is a great comfort to know that our loved ones want
us to know they are okay. Don't think you are being silly or wishful
thinking if you see something that may be a sign, chances are, it is!
And if it isn't, so what? It is better to think something is a
communication and be wrong than to miss what a loved one is trying to
tell you.
