An increasingly alarming issue for children with disabilities is bullying at school. This is common both inside and outside the classroom, but more so in the very space where they spend most of their day feeling unsafe. In a survey conducted by the Disability Rights Commission, 38% of children said that they were bullied at school. Of those, 21% said that their teachers bullied them. This is quite a significant percentage when the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act has specific requirements for how school staff should address behavioral issues with children with disabilities. 41% of the surveyed children said that they feel left out at school because of their disability and of those, 43% said the feeling of isolation is due to bullying. These are dangerous numbers when consequences are considered. Children become disinterested in school, withdrawn, depressed, and it is not uncommon for these children to commit suicide. So, what about your child? Have you noticed these changes or a change in beahvior or mood? Bullying comes in so many forms and it is important for parents of children with disabilities to understand how to identify harassment, how to react, when to step in, and the laws and the rights of these children. There are many different resources to utilize, from the web to newly developed educating curriculum, the PACER Center has developed a curriculum that educates and trains parents on exactly these things. The best way to help your child or any child is awareness. Participating directly in your child’s life. Stay aware and stay focused. If you or your child have experienced bullying in your school, please contact us at 360-507-0944 or send us an email to info@wyattshouse.org .
