Fiber Optic Network Announced
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pat Riordan, president and CEO of Cellcom,recently announced that the company is building a new fiber optic network in Door County. The network will deliver high-speed Internet access, increase capacity for data services, expand the wireless network and prepare the network for wireless 4G technology in the entire county. Work on the first leg of the route, from Green Bay to Sturgeon Bay, began in March and will be completed by the end of 2011. The final stage of the project will be to extend the network to Gills Rock in 2012.
DCEDC and Cellcom joined forces with city and county representatives to plot a fiber route into Sturgeon Bay that can provide telecommunications services to high-demand users, including the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park, the hospital, shipyards and others that could benefit from this ultra-high broadband network. The rest of the county will benefit from enhanced wireless services, including high-speed voice and data services. This new network helps to address a longstanding DCEDC goal to improve telecommunications infrastructure throughout the peninsula.
DCEDC is confident that the enhanced Internet speed and reliability will attract new businesses and further energize the area's business climate; the new network gives us the opportunity to market our area as a fiber-driven business community. DCEDC and Nsight/Cellcom representatives will be meeting with local businesses in the coming weeks to let them know about the network and the services that will be available. DCEDC, in association with the UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center, recently announced that Patrick and Jessica Markham of Arneson Aftermarket in Sturgeon Bay are the winners of a $1,000 cash award for the best business plan originating from the 10th annual NxLevel Entrepreneurial Training course conducted earlier this year. Arneson Aftermarket is a startup business with a mission of providing choice to marinas, marine service professionals and boat owners by supplying aftermarket diesel marine parts, initially starting with maintenance items such as oil and fuel filters. The eight-week NxLevel Entrepreneurial Training course will again be offered in Door County beginning in late January 2012. |
