Pine Creek Trout stocked Oct. 2, 2012 - behind Slate Run Tackle Shop
Pine Creek Trout stocked Oct. 2, 2012 - behind Slate Run Tackle Shop

October 3, 2012 Newsletter
Greetings!

Fly fishing for fall trout continues to be excellent on Pine Creek! There are so many trout, as the video above gives an example in only one small riff. The video in the next pictures shows many of the trout entering Pine yesterday. After being stocked, the fish slowly dispersed up and downstream. This writer was amazed to see so many trout in one place. Everything a fly fisherman could want is here - great numbers of trout, varying hatches and spinner falls, terrestrials, wonderful water levels and temperature - and of course, the splendor of Pine Creek as the leaves begin to turn.  Our incredible year is moving forward with, perhaps, a fall that will go down as one of the best ever. With fly fishing and numbers of trout so good, we are thinking of having a clinic here at the shop, around Christmas, on winter trout fishing on freestone water. Many have said they will give it a try - the trout will be here! Again, trout are being caught from the Pettecote Junction pools all the way through the large trout concentrations along Slate Run and Little Slate to the Naval Run Pool and all the way down to the Cooney Flats...

 Tips

Keep in contact with the shop website and watch for the newsletter. We will be updating stream conditions almost daily so you are aware of conditions and what the trout are taking. We hope you can schedule some fine fall fly fishing (keep early winter thoughts open as well) on Pine into your schedule. We'd love to share it with you!   Below are a few flies that continue to hatch and some of their imitations:
Slate Drake (yes they are still hatching!) in a size 10-12; sulphurs; Light Cahills (cream, yellow, and orange variations) in size 12-16; a heptagenia (pale yellow) in a 16-18; BWO's in sizes 16-18; Brown Caddis in a 14-16; Yellow Caddis (Neophylax) in 14-16; dark moddled stone fly in a 12-14; Tricos in 18 (16 if you're lucky) and down to a 22; a white midge in 20-28; the brown-mottled October Caddis in 10-12 (Orvis' Yak); the Yellow Crane Fly in a 12 (Pine Creek Special); and corresponding nymphs, wets, and emergers to go with the dries. Add to these the ever-needed Stimulator in 8-10, occasional grasshopper, cricket, green weenie, and a few buggers, muddlers, and sculpins and you are just about set. Just about, because I wouldn't go for trout anymore without a good supply of Psycho Ants, Chernobyl Ants (invented for trout fishing on the larger western rivers), and the various two or three additional huge patterns in The Shop's "Bass Drawyer" (various hopper patterns) - they are even better for trout!

Fall trout fishing, different from spring, is quite possibly its equal. The water temperatures are hovering in the middle 50s and lower 50s in the mouths of the feeder streams. Trout are not only in the normal feeding stations where food is funneled to them, they are also cruising much lower in the pools doing a little search-and-find on their own. The flies listed above are all producing from one place and time on the creek to another. But, remain stealthy, the water is clear and although you can see the fish, they can see you also. Also, it can't be said enough, try the big stuff on a 3x or 4x leader - the leader won't kink and twist up, you won't break off as easily, and it will allow you to land the trout sooner with less stress to the fish.

Jamie fishing the Naval Run Pool...
The air has a different feel now, the humidity is gone, the lingering blanket of heat has passed for another year, and there is a sense of change on the pure, crisp feel of autumn. In this new beginning, it gives great pleasure to realize we do not know all. The hot summer had many believing Pine's trout were doomed. Trout sulking in eddies, ready for their inevitable death? Not nearly - they were alive and well in Pine's countless spring seeps deep in the craggy depths as well as grouped in the mouths of the cold-water tributaries. The fish didn't just survive, they prospered. And, as the water temperatures dropped, they ventured astream. This is the point at which we started to see them as they rose to a well selected imitation. They were still beautiful fish in excellent condition.
For most of us fly fishing is so much more than the catch - one of the quantifying factors society is obsessed with. As you look at the picture above of Jamie on the riffle entering the Naval Run Pool, he is a part of it, transformed in a picture of harmony with the trout, the insects, and the stream he loves. I understand the great number of trout that lived through the summer much more than I ever did, and with that came a better understanding of the power of life itself. There was never any doubt to the trout last summer. As fall continues to Thanksgiving and Christmas, may we continue to be able to wade into Pine's waters, breathe in its pine scented air, and cast a hopeful imitation to one of those great browns...
