THE QSUM QUIPS

ISSUE #16

SEPTEMBER 2012

To All Our Colleagues, Friends and Customers,

In just a few days it'll be October.  That means it's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

While we think it's important to promote awareness every month, we're especially enthusiastic in October.

What are your plans for creating awareness and showing your support?

Here are a few ideas:

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has its own site with lots more ideas.

Educating and providing information is just one way QSUM can make a difference.  We hope you will enjoy this month's issue of QSUM Quips -- it's loaded with great articles.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Henke & Hudson Jones

Thought For The Day
Those who think they have no time for exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.
-- Edward Stanley
NEW TECHNOLOGY
DENSE Trial Selects Matakina's Volpara Software to Assess Breast Density. The DENSE trial, which seeks to determine the cost-effectiveness of biennial screening with mammography and MRI compared to mammography alone in women aged 50-75 years old who have extremely dense breasts (BI-RADS breast density category 4), has selected Matakinaís Volpara software to assess the patientsí breast density.

Device May Cut Re-Excision Rate in Breast Cancer. Re-excision after breast-conserving surgery occurred 50% less often with intraoperative margin assessment by a device that distinguishes cancer cells from normal tissue.
BREAST MRI
Toshiba Opens First MR Research Center. Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc, Tustin, Calif, has opened the Toshiba MR Research Center in Irvine, Calif. The $3 million education and research facility will be used to advance customer training and research.

The goal of the Toshiba MR Research Center is two-fold: to fuel research with our customer partners in order to advance MR imaging, and to offer customers an exceptional, hands-on training experience

ABUS equals MRI as screening option for dense tissue. Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) shows promise as a cost-effective adjunct screening modality compared to MRI for women who have dense breast tissue at mammography.
BREAST RADIATION THERAPY
QSUM's Breast Brachytherapy Bandage
Lying Prone for Radiation Best for Breast Therapy. Receiving radiation while in the prone position was associated with about an 86% reduction in the amount of lung tissue irradiated in women with cancer in the right breast, and a 91% reduction for women with cancer in the left breast.

BRCA Carriers at Extra Risk From Radiation. Young women at high familial risk for breast cancer may see an even greater risk from diagnostic scans that expose them to chest radiation, including mammograms.
PET/PEM/BSGI INFORMATION
Molecular signature predicts radiotherapy's benefit. Researchers have validated a radiosensitivity molecular signature that could lead to better radiation therapy decisions for patients with breast cancer.

PET/CT of Lymph Nodes May Predict Breast Cancer Recurrence. PET/CT imaging of a patientís lymph nodes before treatment could help doctors predict disease recurrence in women with invasive ductal breast cancer.

Low-dose Single-head Molecular Breast Imaging a Possibility. New research is confirming that it is possible to lower the overall radiation exposure to a patient, making MBI particularly safe for high-risk women with dense breasts.

Using Molecular Breast Imaging Can Decrease Radiation Exposure    Several studies have demonstrated the ability of MBI to detect cancers otherwise missed by mammography and ultrasound, and now researchers are performing studies at lower doses in hopes of confirming a method to reduce the overall radiation exposure to the patient.

GENERAL MAMMOGRAPHY

Cancer in Dense Breasts No More Deadly. Mammographic breast density may be one of the strongest risk factors for developing breast cancer, but it doesn't have an impact on survival.

Is breast density notification too much information for women? Knowledge about breast density will prove beneficial, but it may complicate womenís screening decisions, lead to confusion about screening follow-up, increase the potential for false-positives, and create additional healthcare costs.

Women Want More Info on Breast Cancer Surgery. Almost all women want to know the expected results of breast reconstruction surgery prior to breast cancer treatment, but few of them actually get the information.

New Estimates: Americans Can Prevent Almost 400,000 Cancers Annually. In the United States, approximately 386,000 cases ñ one third of the most common cancers ñ could be prevented.

Breast tomosynthesis: If you build it, they will come! Digital breast tomosynthesis isn't in the experimental phase anymore -- it's now beginning to help practices build volume and reduce recall rates.

Keeping Your Self-Esteem After a Mastectomy. Here are some ways to feel better about yourself and your body following a mastectomy.

Cancer in Dense Breasts No More Deadly. Mammographic breast density may be one of the strongest risk factors for developing breast cancer, but it doesn't have an impact on survival.

Screening Mammography Reduces Mortality Risk by 50% or More. Regular screening mammography reduces mortality from breast cancer by at least 50% in women 50 to 69 years of age.

Lack of Sleep Linked to Breast Cancer Aggressiveness. For the first time, lack of sleep has been associated with more aggressive breast cancers.

Access to Primary Care Improves Breast Cancer Outcomes. Women who made 10 or more office visits during the 24 months before being diagnosed with cancer were 50% less likely to receive a diagnosis of late-stage disease.

Bra Size Linked To Breast Cancer Risk (via redOrbit)

redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports - Your Universe Online The same gene that can determine a woman's breast size could also be linked to her odds of developing breast cancer, with larger cup-sizes more likely to develop tumors, according to the results of a new study California-based personal genomics...

Some imaging studies not needed for breast cancer metastasis. The routine use of bone scans, liver ultrasound, and chest radiography in the staging evaluation of primary breast cancer patients is of little value in detecting metastatic disease in women with clinical stage I and II cancers.

The Lesbian Breast Cancer Link.   A link between lesbians and cancer, particularly breast cancer, is more than speculation, say experts.
