Volunteering at Sequoia
Sequoia Gallery + Studios has received support from two arts organizations this year.

The Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council has granted us funds to produce an informational postcard for wide area distribution.

Cultural Coalition of Washington County granted us funds to have local musicians perform at every First Tuesday reception.

This support is critically important to the success of Sequoia.

November Featured Artists

Henson_Outdoor Market
Outdoor Market, Grace Henson

Grace Henson

The energy, color and activity of outdoor markets are the central theme of Grace Henson's pictures in the November show. There are three acrylic paintings depicting people, dogs and products one might find at a typical outdoor market. With so much activity going on in the picture, the compositional organization became one of the main puzzles to be resolved.

The remainder of Grace's paintings are small images of the products one might purchase at an outdoor market. They are created with a colorful array of iridescent and metallic acrylic paints.

Grace would like to project a happy, even humorous view of what has become a common summer activity almost everywhere.

Christy Perrine

Perrine, Retreat
Retreat, Christy Perrine

A landscape artist not afraid to push boundaries, Christy has redirected the traditional use of pastel to create a unique style. Out of frustration with conventional use of pastel, she began exploring the use of colored acrylic ground to develop her working surface. Wanting to convey a sense of drama and power to pull the viewer into her landscape, Christy paints her ground with bold, strong brushstrokes that create a depth and added level of translated energy. A nod to the mastery of impressionism is constantly present in each of Perrine's compositions, specifically influenced by the dramatic and deliberate brush strokes present in the works of Edgar Degas.

Her intentional choice of background tint serves to create an added dimension to each finished piece. This tone vibrating through lends itself to Christy's desire to portray a sense of history in her work. Constantly toying with the pull from representation to abstraction, she deftly crafts cool, comforting memories of places familiar to all.

JoAnn Wellner

House of Poppies, JoAnn Wellner

Glass art has been a large part of JoAnn's life over the past thirty years. Her interest began in the stained glass process and eventually led into glass fusing. Recurring detailed floral images, impressionistic landscapes, and textured pieces dominate her work.

Working within the parameters of what the medium of glass will allow the artist to do, it is an on-going challenge to take the vision JoAnn has in mind and interpret it successfully into glass. She continues to be inspired to learn new techniques and to see where that information takes her in the journey to improve her artwork and truly find her "visual voice."

Volunteering at Sequoia

Whether you are an artist, collector or someone who just appreciates fine art, you can help Sequoia by volunteering to help staff the Gallery. Gallery staffers serve 4 hour shifts on the days of their choosing, depending on slots available.

You can further support Sequoia's efforts to bring more people and vitality to downtown Hillsboro by becoming a Friend of Sequoia. For a $50 annual fee you will receive a 10% discount on gallery purchases and classes. These funds will help with Sequoia's operating expenses and efforts to bring special programs to the Hillsboro arts community.

Membership forms are available at Sequoia Gallery for both volunteers and Friends.
