Greetings!

small chewy brush illigers
Cooper, Illiger's Macaw, playing with the new Doodle Brush.

I hope every birdie had a Happy Valentine's Day!  You can see that Cooper is enjoying his valentine's gift, a new foot toy called the Doodle Brush.  It isn't even on the website yet.  The Doodle Brush is one of two new types of our original Chewy Brush.  The other brush, the Burly Brush, is a bit larger and shaped differently.  We will be adding these and a couple of other new designs to the website within the next week.

Remember to check our website or Facebook page often for new designs; and always remember to practice safe toys!

Sincerely,

Lisa McManus

Q&A With a Wise Old Bird

ask gandalf
Hey, it's question and answer time and do I have some silly questions but brilliant answers as usual.

Dear Gandalf:

The people that feed me keep saying to "use my inside voice"....what in the world do they mean?  Do you have different voices?

Signed, Confused

Dear Confused:

Of course I have different voices.  Mine starts at loud, and then goes to louder and then right on to LOUDEST!  Boy do I get attention when I turn up the volume.

As far as inside and outside who knows 'cause I never get outside, but I imagine that I'd use the same voices there too.

Dear Gandalf:

Do you wish you were a different kind (species) of bird?

Signed, Wishful

Dear Wishful:

WHAT?  Silly question because I'm a blue and gold macaw and I couldn't possibly want to be anything else.  What would I do with my beautiful feathers? How about you...do you wish to be anything else?

Wishful replied:  I guess not but sometimes I'd like to be able to fly outside like those birdies do.  They look like they are having so much fun going from tree to tree.

Gandalf replied:  Yeah, but did you notice that they don't get regular meals like we do and it's really cold out there sometimes. Also they don't have toys to play with either or slaves to clean up after them.  I'm happy where I am.

Ok, enough for now.  I'm sure you all are enlightened enough for now so keep those questions coming to wiseoldbird@yahoo.com .  As always I sign off with ARRRGGGGHHHHHHH and it's time for a nap.

I am waiting for YOUR questions!  Send them to wiseoldbird@yahoo.com so I can amaze you with my answers.

Gandalf

Doodle Brush Foot Toy

Hours of fascination!

The Doodle Brush is a foot toy made from an infant safety toothbrush with plastic pacifiers and charms attached to the handles.  The handles make the brush easy for most birds to hold onto as they explore all the charms and the bristles of the brush.

The Burly Brushburly brush

Let the fun begin!

Made from a safety toothbrush, the Burly Brush is the largest of the three specialty toothbrush foot toys.  It's different shape provides lots of places for your bird to hold on to it as he plays with the charms and bristles of the brush.  Your bird is in for hours of fun with this toy!

Bird Vision

From Wikipedia,

With forward-facing eyes, the Bald Eagle has a wide field of binocular vision.

Vision is the most important sense for birds, since good eyesight is essential for safe flight, and this group has a number of adaptations which give visual acuity superior to that of other vertebrate groups; a pigeon has been described as "two eyes with wings".[1] The avian eye resembles that of a reptile, with ciliary muscles that can change the shape of the lens rapidly and to a greater extent than in the mammals. Birds have the largest eyes relative to their size within the animal kingdom, and movement is consequently limited within the eye's bony socket.[1] In addition to the two eyelids usually found in vertebrates, it is protected by a third transparent movable membrane. The eye's internal anatomy is similar to that of other vertebrates, but has a structure, the pecten oculi, unique to birds.

Birds, unlike us but like fishamphibians and reptiles, have four types of colour receptors in the eye. These give birds the ability to perceive not only the visible range but also the ultraviolet part of the spectrum, and other adaptations allow for the detection of polarized light or magnetic fields. Birds have proportionally more light receptors in the retina than mammals, and more nerve connections between the photoreceptors and the brain.

Some bird groups have specific modifications to their visual system linked to their way of life. Birds of prey have a very high density of receptors and other adaptations that maximize visual acuity. The placement of their eyes gives them good binocular vision enabling accurate judgement of distances. Nocturnal species have tubular eyes, low numbers of colour detectors, but a high density of rod cells which function well in poor light. Ternsgulls and albatrosses are amongst the seabirds which have red or yellow oil drops in the colour receptors to improve distance vision especially in hazy conditions.
