Greetings!

spoons tubes

It's hard to believe that August is here and the summer is almost over!  I do hope that every birdie is staying comfortable and not over-heating.

One of the new toy designs that is making its debut this month has so many delightful aspects that a name for the toy is being elusive.  SO!  We are asking you to name the toy.  This great new toy is pictured to the right and is approximately 12" in length.  The colorful tubes are made from paperboard and are 100% recycled and non-toxic.  There are rubbery rings in between the tubes that add another texture, and hanging from the plastic chain and spoons are plastic buttons, beads and shiny bells for ringing.  Your birds will really enjoy this toy and all its fascinating detail.

Our NAME THAT TOY Contest begins with receipt of this newsletter and ends August 20th.  Put your thinking cap on and send in your entry (or entries, send as many names as you like) to birdiebritches@gmail.com.  While you're at it, add a note to Gandalf!  The winner will receive two of these great toys, and if you place an order to accompany your prize (not required) you will receive a 20% discount and free shipping!  Send those entries in now so you don't miss the deadline!

Remember to check the Quick Links each month in the far right column.  You will find the articles and websites informative, helpful and/or fun.

Sincerely,

Lisa McManus

Q&A With a Wise Old Bird

ask gandalf
I know you are all excited to hear from me again!

Dear Gandalf,
I am a 6 year old Rose Breasted Cockatoo.  I have been rehomed here since Christmas.  I love my new surroundings and other bird friends.  My problem - my human thinks I need a bigger cage!  I feel so safe and secure in my original cage but I don't want her to be disappointed in me.. I have trouble with my feet and don't really need more room.  HELP ...(she thinks I would have more fun with more toys in a bigger cage.)
Raspberry

Dear Raspberry,
As you know it is sometimes very difficult to retrain your humans no matter how hard we try.  Do you get out of this small cage a lot during the day?  If so then you are probably okay in the small cage.  However you know I always believe bigger is better in most situations so if your human wants to give you a larger cage I'd say great!  You don't have to use all of it.  Just use the part you want and lots of toys would be good too.  I don't care much for toys except that I really like the Squiddy and foraging in the pockets of the Birdie Britches and chasing the little birds.

If you have trouble with your feet then stick to the natural branches that I'm sure will be in your new cage.  Don't go on any of those rough ones.

I'm going to tell you a secret so don't tell anyone.  I am never confined to a cage because I am so old and my human is so gullible, but at night I climb into a VERY small cage.  It used to belong to a tiny Amazon.  I like it because it makes me feel secure.  There is a blanket around the back so it's kind of like a cave.  If my human comes in I quickly exit because I don't want anyone to know that I love that cage.

Dear Gandalf,
Does the wise Gandalf have any advice for owners who recently lost a feathered friend?  One of her tiels died Memorial Day and I was wondering if there was anything special I can do, or give her, to help her through this mourning period.

Dear Friend,
It is very nice of you to want to help your friend.  With my advanced age I have lost many friends over the years and in time your friend will heal.  Another way is to help other birds, like me.  She could bring me some treats and that would make her feel better I'm sure ... well at least it would make me feel better.

Have you ever gotten a new toy and couldn't wait to put it in your bird's cage, only to find out that it doesn't hang down far enough? We have the solution - the Toy Extender!

The Toy Extender is a length of plastic chain with a ring on each end and a quick link attached to a ring on one end.  Just attach the quick link on the toy to the single ring on the Extender and the other end to the cage.

The Toy Extender comes in two strengths, regular and heavy.  Regular is 1 1/2" links and comes in 3 sizes, 4 1/2", 6 1/2" and 8 1/2", and 4 colors, blue, green, orange and pink.  Heavy is 3" links and comes in 2 sizes, 5" and 10", and 3 colors, white, blue and green.

It's Incredi-Ball!

Let the fun begin!

Your bird has dreamed about this toy!  The Incredi-Ball is a 3" wiffle-type ball with fleece strung through the holes and knotted and plastic chain strung on the fleece next to the knots.  The plastic chain has bells and pacifiers hanging at the ends and a fleece tassel at the bottom of the ball.  On top is a plastic wheel with links and beads hanging from it and a large bead at the very top to complete the package.

Imagine the hours of fun your bird will have!

Binkie Links

Tickles a bird's fancy!

The shape of the pacifier is something that birds love to explore with their tongue, and ringing bells is irresistible; put those two things together in one toy and you have a toy birds can't resist.

The Binkie Link has three strands of plastic chain with the pacifiers and bells attached to them.  They come in 3 sizes: Small, Medium, Large and XXL, to please all size birds.

Order one today and give your bird a real treat!
