Q&A With a Wise Old Bird
I know you are all excited to hear from me again!
Dear Gandalf,
I am a 6 year old Rose Breasted Cockatoo. I have been rehomed here since Christmas. I love my new surroundings and other bird friends. My problem - my human thinks I need a bigger cage! I feel so safe and secure in my original cage but I don't want her to be disappointed in me.. I have trouble with my feet and don't really need more room. HELP ...(she thinks I would have more fun with more toys in a bigger cage.)
Raspberry
Dear Raspberry,
As you know it is sometimes very difficult to retrain your humans no matter how hard we try. Do you get out of this small cage a lot during the day? If so then you are probably okay in the small cage. However you know I always believe bigger is better in most situations so if your human wants to give you a larger cage I'd say great! You don't have to use all of it. Just use the part you want and lots of toys would be good too. I don't care much for toys except that I really like the Squiddy and foraging in the pockets of the Birdie Britches and chasing the little birds.
If you have trouble with your feet then stick to the natural branches that I'm sure will be in your new cage. Don't go on any of those rough ones.
I'm going to tell you a secret so don't tell anyone. I am never confined to a cage because I am so old and my human is so gullible, but at night I climb into a VERY small cage. It used to belong to a tiny Amazon. I like it because it makes me feel secure. There is a blanket around the back so it's kind of like a cave. If my human comes in I quickly exit because I don't want anyone to know that I love that cage.
Dear Gandalf,
Does the wise Gandalf have any advice for owners who recently lost a feathered friend? One of her tiels died Memorial Day and I was wondering if there was anything special I can do, or give her, to help her through this mourning period.
Dear Friend,
It is very nice of you to want to help your friend. With my advanced age I have lost many friends over the years and in time your friend will heal. Another way is to help other birds, like me. She could bring me some treats and that would make her feel better I'm sure ... well at least it would make me feel better.
