Greetings!

Squiddy - Medium

As promised last month we are introducing the Sleepee Teepee, Squiddy and Buckets & Bells. We had these toys at the shows in St. Charles, IL and Omaha, NE, and have made a couple of upgrades since then.  We think your birds will enjoy these new additions.

Gandalf is enjoying his celebrity status and answering questions from you and your birds, so keep those letters coming!  If your bird would like to send a picture with the letter, please help him with the attachment.

Please remember that the loud noises during the 4th of July weekend can hurt our pets' ears and be pretty scary.  Make sure your pets are safe and comfortable!

Sincerely,

Lisa McManus

Q&A With a Wise Old Bird

ask gandalf

Well here I am again in all my glory ready to answer three questions submitted by my fans.

Dear Gandalf, if I see a big green bird walking across the kitchen floor should I bite him or head the other way?  I live in a house that has lots of birds but most of them stay in their room,.  Once in awhile this big green bird with a yellow spot on his head finds a way out and he actually has the nerve to walk right up to me and then passes me by.  Doesn't he know that I'm an 84 lb. dog with big teeth?

Confused Gilbert

Dear Confused Gilbert, what you are confronting is probably an Amazon parrot.  They can be rather intimidating and my best advice is to avoid him. DON'T under any circumstances chase him because he won't be afraid of you and will puff himself up and then bite you.  I also need to warn you that this is the mating season for Amazons and they can be very grouchy at this time.

Dear Gandalf, my wings were trimmed but a few feathers are starting to grow back; can I still fly?  I'm waiting for my human to take me outside, but I don't want to look stupid if I try to fly and fall instead.

Curious Cockatiel

Dear Curious Cockatiel, oh what an opportunity and decision you have presented for yourself.  First you must decide whether you want to stay in this home or fly away, but do keep in mind that winters can be a bit cold and food scarce for us.

If your feathers are starting to grow back you probably can fly somewhat...not good, but enough to escape over the fence at least using a combination of partial flying and hopping.  Hopefully there won't be a cat on the other side of the fence.  Or at least fly/hop up the nearest tree to the very top....that scares humans a lot.

For myself, I like the spoiled comfy life getting fed everyday and even though I have to put up with some annoying birds I'm not flying away...no way...uh huh.

Dear Gandalf, how can I tell my human that I'm scared when he takes me outside and then he goes inside "for just a minute"?  Yesterday when he left me I saw a hawk up in the sky circling so I hollered real loud and he came back just in time...was I scared!

Thanks for your advice, Mr. Scared

Dear Mr. Scared, you did the right thing.  Make as much noise as you can.  Then you human will come back, not because he sees the hawk but because he doesn't want the neighbors to complain.  You could bite him too...that gets their attention.

Until next month, keep an eye on your humans and send me your questions so I can impart more of my wisdom.

Buckets & Bells

Buckets & Bells

It's a hit with the smaller birds!

Buckets & Bells is a fun toy for small to medium birds.  Two lengths of plastic chain have small plastic buckets and small bells hanging from them.  The toy comes in chain colors of yellow, purple, green, pink, aqua, blue and white.

The little guys love this toy with all the little "things" to play with on it!

Sleepee Teepee

For Sleeping and Playing

Sleepee Teepee - Large

The Sleepee Teepee is made with four wire "legs" coming out of a PVC cap; each "leg" is loaded with fleece strips tied on to the wire and a bell on each of the four ends of the small and medium sizes and a large bead on each of the four ends of the large size.  The legs can be bent in an umbrella fashion and hung above a perch to provide a secure sleeping place and a preening opportunity.

Some birds enjoy snuggling and preening a toy that is in the bird's own colors, or specie specific colors, such as a Blue and Gold Macaw may like a toy in blues and yellows.  If your bird's perches are lower in the cage, a Toy Extender will bring the Sleepee Teepee closer to the perch.  The Toy Extender will be introduced next month but is available to order.

Squiddy

Preening and Fun!

squiddy large

The Squiddy is made of fleece strips that are held together at the top with an imaginative rubber duckie on the small and medium, and a pvc cap on the large.

Birds love to play in the fleece, preen it and snuggle with it.  Some birds enjoy snuggling and preening a toy that is in its own colors, or specie specific colors, such as a sun conure may like a toy in oranges and yellows or greens.  We have offered these options on all 3 sizes.  If you don't see the colors you prefer, we will be happy to make one to your specifications.

The Squiddy pictured here is the large size.
