A Primer on the Contents of an NCAA Major Investigation Self-Report, Part II
An institution prepares a written self-report after the conclusion of a comprehensive and objective internal investigation into alleged NCAA rules-violations. The following are some tips to avoid the most common errors in conducting an internal investigation and preparing the subsequent self-report:
- Follow the institution's written internal investigation policy and procedure.
- Recognize and address all student-athlete NCAA eligibility issues during the internal investigation and in the self-report.
- Provide all student-athletes, institutional employees and athletics representatives (boosters) a notice of their NCAA Bylaw 10.1 (ethical conduct) obligations during investigation interviews.
- Submit all relevant information, including pertinent documents, data and evidence that corroborates or refutes the alleged rules-violation, in the self-report.
- State the specific NCAA bylaw that was violated in the self-report.
- Identify who reported the allegation in the self-report.
- Describe the institution's self-corrective measures and self-imposed penalties that relate to the reported violations in the self-report.
- Document (through a report or memorandum) if the internal investigation determines no rules-violation occurred.
