Firewood & Pests

It is that time of year again when we find ourselves chopping and stacking firewood in preparation of cold winter weather ahead. Nothing can compare to snuggling up next to a warm cozy fire with a good book or watching a football game on TV. Firewood is a source of warmth and comfort, but it's also an avenue for pests to enter the home. These warm moments can go bad if your winter woodpile is infested with pests.

Beetles, ants, termites, wasps, sow bugs, pillbugs, centipedes, spider's even mice enjoy infesting your nicely st

acked firewood. Follow these simple tips to avoid bringing these bugs and rodents inside your house:

  • Store wood outside. Bring in a quantity that you will burn that day and keep it stacked on a small fireplace rack near your fireplace.
  • Storing wood inside for long periods of time allows pests to emerge within the structure.
  • Position woodpile away from the house. Wood stored near the home and on the ground can create a moisture issue and provides a hidden area for pests especially rats.
  • Store wood off the ground. This will help allow air circulation that will help dry the wood.  Your wood will burn better and be less susceptible to insects.
  • Do not spray or treat any wood with pesticides. This is dangerous and can release harmful fumes into the air.
  • Should insects make it inside, remove them by hand or with a vacuum.
