Is it Spring ???

It's already almost the end of April,  but it sure doesn'tspring feel like it yet.  Winter just does not want to let go this year with unusually low temperatures as well as hail, snow & torrential rain storms.  Hopefully May will bring an early start to warm sunny days ahead.

Since most of us start doing some spring cleaning or gardening this time of year, I've included an article below about a very minor but really important home maintenance issue that is usually overlooked. It can be a real fire hazard so please take a minute to read the article and add it to your to-do list.

How to Prevent

Dryer Fires!

Interesting Facts About Dryer Fires

  • Dryer fires start more household fires than any other appliance.

  • Every year in the U.S., thousands of dryer fires cause in excess of $90 million dollars worth of property damage. Improper venting is often the cause of dryer fires.

  • Dryer lint usually fuels and spreads the fire.
  • Typical lint screens only filter out 75% of lint.

Quick Steps

You Can Take To Prevent Dryer Fires

  1. Clean the lint screen before and after each use
  2. Vent dryers to the OUTSIDE.
  3. Make sure hoses aren't clogged.
  4. Pull dryer away from wall and look underneath and behind it.
  5. Check outside for debris or bird's nests which could block air flow.
  6. Remove screens covering outside air ducts Use a short length of RIGID ducting instead of a long length of flexible hose
  7. Avoid using plastic ducting as it is more likely to collapse and trap lint.  Vent hoses should be made of aluminum which is less flammable than plastic.
  8. Allow an opening of at least 120 sq. inches (775 cm) for dryers location in closets or enclosed spaces.  This will allow adequate air flow for proper circulation, and avoid lint build up.
  9. Have a qualified appliance technician clean the inside of the dryer between the rotating drum and the cabinet periodically.
