The Sixfold Path book coverNew Books
The Sixfold Path: Six Simple Exercises for Spiritual Development. Joop van Dam, Floris Books, 2012, 96 pgs.

This book, by a medical doctor, describes Rudolf Steiner's six basic, or supplementary, exercises for harmonizing thinking, feeling, and willing in preparation for meditation. He presents the exercises clearly, illustrating them with real-life examples, and gives suggestions for working with them in groups.

The six exercises have inspired several books and articles, all available from the library. Among them:

Raising the Soul: Practical Exercises for Personal Development, by Warren Lee Cohen [2006].

The Stairway of Surprise: Six Steps to a Creative Life, by Michael Lipson [2002].

Six Steps in Self-Development: The 'Supplementary Exercises', by Rudolf Steiner [2010].

"The Eightfold Path and the Six Accessory Exercises," by John Davy [197-?]. Article.

"The Six Basic Exercises by Rudolf Steiner," by Tom von Gelder [2011]. Online resource.

Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari: Intersecting Lives,  François Dosse, Columbia University Press, 2010, 651 pgs.Deleuze & Guattari

In May 1968, Gilles Deleuze was an established philosopher teaching at the innovative Vincennes University. Félix Guattari was a political militant and the director of an unusual psychiatric clinic. After their unlikely meeting, they engaged in a surprising, productive partnership for many years. The author examines the prolific if improbable relationship between two men of distinct and differing sensibilities, and evaluates the impact of their thought on intellectual, academic, and professional circles.

Yeshayahu Ben Aharon discussed these French philosophers in the fall 2011 issue of the anthroposophical society's newsletter, being human. Also see Fred Amrine's article, "Gilles Deleuze's Philosophy of Freedom," in the current issue.
