Education Programs at Avery County Humane Society Off to Great Start
Thanks to Avery County schools, we have begun efforts to bring companion animal education into county elementary schools. New board member Renie Stewart, a retired Avery County teacher, has teamed up with Dave Malfatone, one of our hard working volunteers, to put together a plan to educate children how to care for their dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. At a young age, children are taught basic information and skills that can be applied to their pets at home.
We are attempting to break the cycle of unfixed animals roaming Avery County, as well as teach youngsters how to respect, feed, and care for their companion animals. Children are enthusiastic and willing to learn, so this can be a very positive experience for them, as one recent group of school children has already shown.
A Board member has agreed to finance all costs associated with the educational program. We're hoping this major undertaking will allow us to live up to the building's name, the Avery County Humane and Education Center.

 Grand Opening Huge Success
This shelter belongs to our supporters in Avery County and they showed it recently, turning out in huge numbers. While the music played, people ate hot dogs and drank lemonade and toured the building.
Staff and volunteers enjoyed hearing comments about how much happier the animals seem and how well they are cared for. Many people brought their adopted dogs to the party!
A volunteer and staff appreciation party was held a week later. A festive time was had by all. Food and beverages were paid for by two private donors. The Main Event, presented by Kim Avery, caterer, and board member, satisfied the palate of all party guests. |

Low Cost Spay/Neuter
The donations are coming in to help low-income residents fix their pets. "This is the root of the problem," remarked board member Doris Swor. "Our energetic new board, staff and volunteers are committed to having as many free roaming animals neutered, as possible."
Furthermore, we believe our newly implemented Avery County educational program will make a serious dent in the number of homeless animals that come into the shelter or are left in boxes by the side of the road. We offer special low cost spay/neuter certificates for those who qualify. Call Charlene or staff at 828-733-2333 for information.
