Grand Opening August 18th

We are celebrating our public grand opening  on Saturday, August 18, from 11am - 2pm at the New Vale Road facility, located behind Ingles Food Center in Newland. Tours of our animals, adoption and education center, will be available. Meet local and county officials, as well as our shelter staff and volunteers. Hot dogs and lemonade will be provided, generously
donated by Ingles. Bring your family to this exciting event and be amazed at the wonderful animal care shelter in Avery County.

Leslie Carter, our new chairperson remarked, "This is an opportunity for Avery County residents to see how well their animals are being care for and that their time and money has been well spent. Our new board members are enthusiastic and staff personnel are pleased with the new, positive attitude at the shelter. Since moving into the building, we are saving more lives and seeing so many adoptions of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens," she added. Charlene Calhoun, shelter manager, said, "Since moving into the new shelter, the adoption rate has just about doubled every month. I am very happy with the new positive attitude among board, staff and volunteers. It is a challenging, exciting and friendly place to work. We are very proud of the new home for Avery County animals. "

Adoptions Doubling
We expected to see an increase in adoptions, but nothing like the last few months. There is little doubt that our marketing presence is attracting people from all over the country, not just in North Carolina and surrounding states. Recently, someone interested in adopting a pet visited our website and drove from Massachusetts to take one of our "angels".  We're told most of our  photographs look professional and they are. Working together, Charlene Calhoun and Bill Avery make sure our animals look their very best. Care and maintenance is costly, but worth it.  Please help us keep adoptions growing!Take a look

Join The "Help Fix Me Club"

Any animal lover knows that one of the main causes of animal mortality is lack of spay/neuter. The Humane Society wants to prevent the growing numbers of homeless animals so we started the Help Fix Me Club.  Two donors are matching every donation and we are going to fix as many roaming cats or dogs as possible. "Many of the animals belong to low-income or poor county residents, who would otherwise not fix their pets. They bring boxes of puppies and kittens into the shelter every week," said Charlene Calhoun, Shelter Manager. Click here to join and prevent homeless animals.
