It's All Good News in April

Moving Day is here. We will be in the new building and open for business on April 19th. All things considered, the construction moved along beautifully.  We have not announced a grand opening yet since most of the donations came from seasonal residents. We want to insure that donors are back to share in the official opening of our new beautiful building. Although we don't constantly ask supporters for money, this is one time we can use all the help we can get.  Moving animals and equipment is expensive, so if you can find it in your heart to help us out, please do and make a donation today.  We are always looking for "time donors" so if you have time and would like to volunteer, please visit our web page.

Sugar Bear Goes Home Smiling
Sugar Bear, an eight-year- old dog was recently adopted thanks to a big push on Facebook.  After a year of searching for a good match and much publicity on Facebook, he was adopted.  Local businesses and residents in and out of the county put Sugar Bear on their Facebook pages. Then, Jeannie O'Neal, a sister of Doris Swor, an ACHS board member, drove all the way from Indiana just to pick up Sugar Bear and take him home. She says Sugar Bear stays by her side all the time. When he is frightened by thunder or lightning,  he will grab his blanket and run to his "safe" spot.  Jeannie loves Sugar Bear and says he has made her life a complete joy.  Now we are working to have Miss Pitty Pat, on right sidebar, a deaf two-year-old dog adopted. We're hoping some kind soul will step forward take Miss Pitty Pat home as well. Our new policy is to pull out all the stops to insure that a healthy dog adopted.

Blitz Finds A Home

Blitz came in with a group of kittens and it was just bad luck that he never went home. All his shelter friends were "picked" to go home, but Blitz just sat there day after day hoping someone would want him. Thanks to all our supporters and a push on Facebook, Blitz was recently placed in his fur-ever home.  This kind of dedication by our shelter staff, Facebook fans and a generous donor is making Avery County Humane Society one of North Carolina's most progressive shelters dedicated to saving animals lives.

Blind Cat Adopted

Joshua is such a beautiful cat and he now has a new home with his adopted family. Our staff is especially thrilled when one of the disabled cats or dogs are adopted. Hooray & Hugs for Joshua!

Highly Educated Princess Abby

Princess Abby is enrolled in the New Leash On Life program set up by the Bureau of Prisons. The goal is to help shelters adopt dogs that need socializing and basic  training. The prisioners work with dogs for eight weeks under the supervision of a professional trainer. Princess Abby is available for adoption.
Perfect For Kids

Judy is the perfect  "mutt" to hang out and be a companion to your daughter or son or both. She loves kids and can be their new best friend. If you can't adopt, consider  sponsoring Judy  for just $35. The money goes directly to food  & medical care.
Miss Pitty Pat is Deaf & Needs a Home

This beautiful dog is deaf but that doesn't bother her. She loves to play and  will be your best friend for life. She is only two years old and being offered free to a good home. Someone with patience can train her  with hand signs. Dogs are quite capable of learning sign language through love, treats, dedication and patience.
Nina Needs Your Love

Nina, about three months old, craves attention and she's just wild about people. This is one dog that will become a best friend for some lucky child or parent. While the program lasts, we are offering her at "Name Your Price: to make room in the shelter during our move.
Magpie Needs You & Will be Fur-ever Grateful!
Magpie is a sweet two year old cat and she's available to a good home. We are offering her at "Name Your Price." Some of our older cats and dogs are available in this program thanks to a generous donor who is committed to saving animal's lives in Avery County.
