Moving Date Grows Near, Volunteers Are Signing Up
Once the county issues our Use and Occupancy Permit, we expect to start moving our animals. Hopefully, this will happen in March. Our new shelter creates many opportunities for volunteers and fosters. We are looking for people to directly care for the animals in and out of the shelter and others interested in administrative work. If you are looking for a worthwhile and rewarding cause working with animals, please visit our volunteer page today.

Congrats To Our Teachers & Students Dogs!
Since 2006, we have partnered with Mountain View Correctional Institute in a program called "A New Leash on Life." This program allows eight inmates to train four of our dogs in basic obedience. The dogs spend eight weeks in training at the correctional facility. The program makes our animals more adoptable, preparing them for their forever homes, and has changed the lives of all the inmates involved. Dogs graduating receive an AKC registration certificate under the program.

WOW - A Record 134 Animal Adoptions In Fourth Quarter
From October to December we set a record breaking total of 134 animal adoptions. October was the biggest month with 68 animals placed in new homes. Thanks to front page story in The Avery Post, our phone was ringing off the hook when we initiated our Fee Waived program. You can become involved in the new shelter by signing up to volunteer for animal, administrative or foster care.

Free Spay/Neuter Clinics If You Qualify Newland residents can spay or neuter their adult cat or dog for free. The root cause of so many unwanted or abandoned animals every year is that they are not neutered. Thanks to an anonymous donor, if you reside in Newland, you can receive a free voucher to have it done locally. For all Avery county low income residents we also have free spay/neutering certificates provided by the Bob and Carol Spector Fundation and Pit Bull Rescue Central. For details on any of these programs, please call 733-6312 and ask for Charlene. |
