The Scoop
May 2012 | Edition 9

Greetings!

Earlier this month, I presented a workshop on PR practices for small businesses at the Do Good Summit, an extraordinary one day conference that brought together social entrepreneurs from around the region to connect on the importance -- and the responsibility -- of good business practices. It was a thrill to be among a lineup of folks including Busboys and Poets founder Andy Shallal, DC Central Kitchen's Robert Egger, and Zingermans' Paul Saginaw, and to highlight the good works of our clients in the process. Have a read of our latest blog post for a recap of the talk, and then keep on reading for some good updates from around the agency.

With all good thoughts-

From the ShopTalk Blog:

PR Strategies for Small Businesses

... If you want the media to pay attention to your stories, you need to be able to think outside of your own day-to-day operations... if you can help a reporter connect dots to a larger trend, and insert yourself as an example of that trend, you'll be sure to catch some positive attention.

Critical Hits:

Here's a look at what we're talking about:

AIDS In the South:

Race, Poverty and Rural Challenges Barriers to Care
The number of HIV/AIDS cases in the South continues to rise, with health care officials citing socioeconomic status, a lack of educational opportunities and limited access to care as some of the main contributing factors.

Connecting Young People in Foster Care to a Better Life

Anytime children are removed from their families of origin, you've got a lot of trauma associated with that...A lot of our young people have moved among multiple foster homes. The challenges of finding stability and trusting people are things that follow them through to adulthood. A lot of them don't have families to act as safety nets for them if they have trouble in college or find themselves out of work."
