Greetings Everyone and Happy Fall Season!

Well, we made it through another summer in Austin and how about all that rain?

I am happy to report that my class at Unity Church has been well attended by a number of enthusiastic folks. Thanks so much for the interest and support!  I am sure I will offer the class again at some point and of course I will let you all know.

Also, I have recently contracted with A & E Medical Billing and am now able to handle your insurance billing should it cover acupuncture services.  A & E is able to determine your coverage and do all the necessary work. I just hand all the info to them and viola, it is done!  That works for me and will hopefully be helpful for a number of you.

Since we are on the verge of cold and flu season I have included some info about this and a safe and readily available herbal formula that can  potentially be very helpful to treat and prevent these maladies.

I am also highlighting a video from Acupuncturists Without Borders.  I wrote about this organization in my first newsletter, about their initial efforts in Haiti to help with the trauma from the earthquake.  This is a follow up to let you know what they are currently doing there.

Thanks as usual and thanks for forwarding this to anyone you think may have an interest!

Best,

Beth

Chinese Medicine and the Prevention and Treatment of Cold and Flu
While you may have heard that there is no cure for the common cold, think again!  Although Chinese Medicine, having been developed thousands of years ago, has no concept of a virus, it has long been able to understand and describe the process of "catching a wind" and has been able to treat the resulting symptoms.  Often, if caught in the initial stages, herbs and/or acupuncture can circumvent the entire process. And, if not caught as early,  a malady that may have had the potential to last several days can be quickened to a much shorter duration.

Of course preventing a cold or flu is always the best way to go. Staying healthy and balanced in general and perhaps taking immune building herbs while healthy is a smart idea.  Chinese Medicine excels at this and can certainly help in this department!

There is much to say about the theory and the prevention and treatment of cold and flu through Chinese Medicine. Most of you may be content to know that it can be treated and that you need  not necessarily suffer through these things.  If you are aching to know more, I cover these things in my class (oh, she mentions her class again), and am recommending the following  link:

Herbal Formula: Gan Mao Ling
Gan Mao Ling is an extremely effective patent remedy for the prevention and initial treatment of colds and flus.   It has a high percentage of strong anti-viral herbs which are known for their effectiveness.  This herbal formula supports the health of the respiratory system, immune system, nervous system, sinuses, stomach and bowels, and the general well-being of the body.   It can prevent or shorten the duration of a cold or flu. It is best taken as soon as first symptoms appear, within the first 24-36 hours.  If a malady becomes full blown beyond this time or has quickly become a bronchitis, other herbs are called for but this is a great place to start. And remember, the vitality of the individual has everything to do with susceptibility to cold and flu so keeping yourself balanced and healthy in the meantime, and maybe taking some tonic and immune building herbs  while feeling good can be a smart practice!

Acupuncturists Without Borders in Haiti
Here is a link to a video from Acupuncturists Without Borders.  They are now providing auricular acupuncture training to Haitians to take to their own people to help with the trauma generated by the earthquake.  In my opinion and experience, auricular (ear) acupuncture/acupressure is very simple to learn and understand, and the effects can be quite profound. Perhaps some day we will acknowledge this as a culture and we will all have this tool to treat ourselves and our families.  I do present ear acupressure in the class I offer, by the way, so if this interests you, stay tuned to my newsletters!

I want to include this list from the World Health Organization in all my newsletters just to remind you of everything acupuncture and Chinese medicine can treat.  As a practitioner I know this is just a partial list, but it is official and great PR! To see the list again
