De La Salle Students Give Back
 | |
De La Salle students cook dinner at Karen House.
| Service is an important component of a De La Salle education. This year our students have worked to raise funds for our Lasallian twin school in Kenya, for Catholic Relief Services to aid Japan, for St. Paul School of Fenton to repair tornado damage, and for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
In addition to these spontaneous acts of charity, each DLS student completes ten hours of service through the school's Service Learning program. This school year, Service Learning students have focused their efforts on two primary areas: serving the homeless at Karen House Catholic Worker and fostering literacy by reading to students at our neighborhood Head Start center.

You Can Share Your Hobbies with our Students During our after-school Renaissance Program
 | |
Ed Rataj with students in chess class.
|
Ed Rataj, De La Salle Board Member and volunteer, teaches chess during our after-school Renaissance Program. He enjoys working with the students and helping them find something they're good at: "Chess really builds their self-confidence, and there is nothing that I love more than occasionally losing; it really makes their day, and mine. The bigger message I'm teaching is about self-esteem; if they can beat an adult at chess, then they can succeed at many other things." Are you passionate about swing dancing, cooking, gardening, baseball, knitting, chess, yoga, or cake-decorating? You can share your hobby or interest with the students at De La Salle. We're looking for volunteers available one day a week for 12 weeks from 3:30 - 4:30 pm during the school year. E-mail us to learn more and volunteer!

"Strike Out Smoking in Missouri" De La Salle students serve to support a positive message
Last week, Missouri Governor, Jay Nixon, and Cardinal pitcher, Adam Wainwright, filmed a public service announcement with De La Salle students to promote an anti-smoking message. This PSA for the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services was filmed at the studios of KETC Channel 9 and will be aired on the Fox network.

Notre Dame student, Matt Hawk, tutors at De La Salle.
|
Notre Dame's Summer Service Learning Program is an eight-week service-learning course for approximately 200 Notre Dame students. In addition to their volunteer work, students complete reading and writing assignments over the summer. This work earns the students three hours of credit in Theology. For over three years, students have served in the Ville neighborhood assisting in the community garden, at North Side Community Center, or at De LaSalle Middle School. Thanks to all of our volunteers for being models of service to our middle school students! E-mail us for more information about Summer Service Learning opportunities.
