Meet Our "Star of the Month" Lamont P. - De La Salle Class of 2013
De La Salle's "Star of the Month" Program celebrates the Lasallian values of demonstrating excellence in education, while being of service to God, family, and community through the recognition of one student each month who best embodies these qualities. The roots of this tradition date back to Saint John Baptist de La Salle - a priest and educational innovator living in 17th century France - who began a new system of Christian Schools in which the teachers assist parents in the educational, ethical and religious formation of their children.
De La Salle Middle School's Star of the Month is nominated by staff and selected by staff and students. Each month, this exemplary student is recognized during our Star of the Month breakfast or lunch celebration.
Lamont with teachers, Mike Hall, Andrew Long, and Patrick Holly, and principal, Phil Pusateri. | September's Star, Lamont, was recognized for his maturity, excitement about learning, and pursuit of excellence in all that he does.

Education Nation NBC's National Broadcast About Improving Education in America
The two-day Education Nation Summit in New York City focused on the most pressing education issues, and included an interview with President Obama, on Monday. The President said that he is looking for best practices, or - as he termed it - "laboratories of excellence". "I'm interested in fostering these laboratories of excellence. If we lengthen the school day here, or we give them a little more home work there, or we're setting aside time for personal development for teachers here, or we're building a culture of excellence among kids at that school, that works, once we find out something works, we want to import that into every school." Read the transcript of the interview with President Obama, and learn more about the Education Nation Summit at www.educationnation.com.
De La Salle is already putting these best practices to work. We have an extended school day and school year, multiage learning groups, parental/guardian participation in the school community, and a Graduate Support Program, which extends through high school and into college. The first classes to complete De La Salle's academic program show that transforming lives using this academic model is successful. To-date we have 98 graduates, 92% of whom have graduated from some of the finest college preparatory high schools in our area, and 65% of these students are continuing on to 2- or 4-year college degree programs. First Friday Speaker Series Helping to Create a College-Bound Culture
Through De La Salle's Speaker Series, we invite members of the Greater St. Louis Community to join us in helping to create a college-bound culture at our school. Speakers are asked to talk to our middle school students about their careers and specifically how their college education has helped them achieve their career goals. And, because adversity and obstacles can sometimes be our best teachers and motivators, we encourage our speakers to share the challenges they faced or continue to face as they work through their educational and personal journeys.
KMOV News 4 Anchor Vickie Newton | The Speaker Series is scheduled for the first Friday of every month, from 7:45 - 8:30 am. We have Vickie Newton and Dietrich Smith scheduled for November and December, and are looking for speakers for January - June, 2011. If you would like to come and speak to our students, or know someone who might, please e-mail Melissa Brickey at mbrickey@delasallems.org.
