Police Services News
Steve Hayman

I am happy to announce the appointment of Lt. Brian Schmutz as our new Chief of Police Services. Lt. Schmutz comes to Rancho Santa Margarita with over 20 years of law enforcement experience in a variety of assignments including patrol operations, investigations, and custody. Our previous police chief, Lt. Stacey Taylor, left RSM to head up a new drug education initiative for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Lt. Taylor did an outstanding job and while we congratulate her, we are excited to welcome Lt. Schmutz to the City. I anticipate as you get the opportunity to meet the Chief, you will be equally impressed.

I am also proud to share with you that two Deputies from Rancho Santa Margarita were honored at the Orange County Sheriff's Department 23rd Annual Medal of Valor Luncheon in April. Deputy Dave Lee and Investigator Dave Purser received the Medal for Lifesaving for their exceptional efforts in saving the life of a two-month old baby in cardiac arrest last summer. When the Deputies arrived at the scene, they found a lifeless baby and quickly began CPR until paramedics arrived and began advanced medical treatment. The baby was transported to the hospital where he began breathing on his own. These deputies performed exceptionally well in a very stressful environment and saved the baby's life.

Please join me in thanking these fine deputies and in welcoming our new Chief of Police, Lt. Brian Schmutz.

Sincerely,

Steven E. Hayman

Operation Rack Pack

Helps Returning Marines

From 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines (2/5)

Operation Help a Hero and the City of RSM are collecting donations for Operation Rack Pack (ORP).

The men of 2/5 are expected to return from their deployment (Japan disaster relief) in June. To show appreciation, gifts of gratitude for 675 Marines will be placed in their barracks to greet them. The goal of ORP is to provide each Marine with a clean room, a fridge full of refreshments, welcome home signs and more. Ideally, every Marine will be able to come home and have the necessary items to take a shower, put on clean clothes, grab dinner and enjoy some pampering without having to go to storage or to the store.

A wish list has been posted on the City's website. Donations can be dropped off at City Hall or the Bell Tower Regional Community Center. Donation deadline is June 1, 2011. Volunteer sign-up deadline is May 27, 2011.

For more information about donations contact Christine Groves at [email protected] or Wendy Ruiz at [email protected]. Contact Cindy Farnum to volunteer or to involve your business at [email protected]. Visit Operation Help a Hero for even more ideas to show your support of the United States Marines!
