SHAKER PRIMER

A Short History Lesson for the Curious...

Over 30 years ago the founders of The Shaker Shoppe's principle business was the design, manufacture & installation of high-end kitchen & built-in cabinetry.  The latter half of the 1980's brought with it many requests for "Shaker" styling in these kitchens...and repeated requests for furniture to compliment them that was of a higher quality than the "kit" forms available from other sources.

Having an admiration for Shaker design instilled during numerous family trips exploring New England's historic sites, it was a natural decision for the founders to re-format their business to fill this niche that was identified.  In the following years a plan was developed that would lay the groundwork for The Shaker Shoppe of Lititz.

We are often asked what Shaker is, and who were they?...Are they Amish...did they live in Pennsylvania?...are we Shakers?  That said, we offer this short history lesson for the curious:

 Tree of Life

The Shakers were the largest and most successful Utopian venture in existence in their time, with an estimated four thousand to six thousand members in eighteen principal communities from Maine to Kentucky by 1840.  The Shakers peacefully pursued the vision of their founder, Mother Ann Lee (1736-1784), who came to America with eight followers in 1774.  They turned away from the rest of society, which they simply called the World.  They lived in large families which were both celibate and communal, devoted their lives to work, and celebrated their love of God in the rousing dance worship that gave them their name.  Simplicity was their hallmark, they cared little for wordly goods.

As they created a new, more perfect society, the Shakers also produced a visual environment of such quiet power that it continues to impress the observer centuries later. While widely known for their highly functional, simplistic furniture designs, other Shaker accomplishments include their art & architecture along with inventions such as the circular saw and the ball-point pen.

Shaker work, devoid of any unnecessary ornamentation or frivolous detail, endures.

PLANET EARTH
Our Constant Efforts to Keep The Shaker Shoppe as Green as it can be...

 green hands

It is tough to imagine operating a business like The Shaker Shoppe without the wonderful resources that this planet provides us with.  From the fine woods that we craft our furniture with, to the cotton that is used to weave our chair seats...all are the bounty of our fragile planet and cannot be taken for granted.

To start with, all of the woods that we work with are procured through suppliers and means utilizing sustainable forestry and conservation methods.  We only use wood that is grown in North America for our furniture and do not offer species or varieties of wood which are harvested from endangered ecosystems from lands afar.

Our Cabinetmakers are very mindful of the material that they work with and catalog cut-offs for use in crafting smaller accessory items such as clocks, sconces & shelves.  We typically schedule the crafting of these smaller items when the material is available in the size and quantity needed.

All of the shavings and dust that is produced in our cabinetshop is collected by a machine that is connected to all of our woodworking machinery.  This material is deposited in a container located outside of the building and recylced for use as animal bedding and other agricultural uses.  Pieces of wood too large for this end use are boxed and sold as kindling or fuel for woodstoves & fireplaces.

Dust Collector
This Machine is attached to all of our woodworking machinery to collect wood shavings & dust for recycling.

Any waste material that is generated in our finishing process is also recylced, if it cannot be used it is safely stored and transported to a facility where it is distilled and separated for use as reclaimed solvents and fuels.

Other recent efforts to conserve include partnering with our electricity provider to increase our buildings insulation, update our heating systems and convert to more efficient lighting in our workshop & showrooms.  Hybrid electric/gas vehichles have also been purchased & put in use by The Shaker Shoppe to help reduce petroleum consumption.

We ask that you join us in our efforts to keep things as green as possible here on Earth...we are all needed to keep the effort going!
