A Shake-up the Laundry Room?
A recent client's remodeling project....
A few months back a client from Maryland that had purchased quite a few furniture pieces from us asked if we could come up with a clever way to disguise the laundry machines in their home. The dilemma they faced was upgrading their current washer & dryer to more energy & resource efficient models, all while keeping the flavor of the project in the style that they loved...as Shaker as possible. The advent of the front-loading washer & dryers that are being offered these days made this request a breeze to fulfill, in the past we have had to revert to clumsy hinged counters and the like to enable access into the older top-loaders. With this project we were able to fix the counter, which was granite, and simply bi-fold the doors that were hinged on vertical partitions. We crafted this unit with 1-1/8" thick doors to enable them to hold up to the use a laundry room receives, and hinged them together using "SOSS" hinges in a black-chrome finish that were virtually invisible after being mortised into the doors edges. The finish that was selected for this project was our "Green over Red" painted museum finish. We have had many requests to craft furniture & built-in cupboards over the years to help to keep modern appliances & electronic gadgetry out of view. Many of our clients have historic homes where these conveniences just look a little out of place when not in use. In addition, many of our standard furniture pieces are designed in the same manner.
If you have a need for a project like this in your home or office just give us a call or drop us an email, we would love another challenge! You can view examples of other built-in type projects that we have crafted HERE. |
| Our New Farmhouse Table!
Hand-Planed & Planked with Breadboard Ends....
As long as we have been crafting tables we have been listening to client requests as to what type table and surface finish they were seeking...we seemed to be running into a Mama-Bear, Baby-Bear, Poppa-Bear type syndrome with some liking more tool marks & wood character and some liking less. In response we offered our table surfaces, which are always hand-planed, in either a "sanded-dining table top", a "sanded-farm table top", or a "heavy hand-planed farm table top". Three degrees of texture that we thought would please all tastes...we were wrong. Enter our newest table surface option, "The Farmhouse Top."
This new style is more heavily textured than our "hand-planed farm table top" and more wood character such as knots and tooling marks are left in to create a table top that appears ancient. I recently had a client describe this new surface as being "Viking-Like"...we took that as a compliment! This style tabletop also features bread-board ends, planking, and more rounded & worn edges & corners...all part of the look. At the same time that this table surface appears aged & textured, it is finely finished and smooth to the touch. A superb 7 step finishing process is applied to all of our table surfaces to provide the ultimate in protection from heat, moisture, household chemicals & abrasion. Only a damp cloth is needed to keep it looking "old."
The table shown in these images is crafted out of quarter-sawn white oak with the top being stained our "cinnamon" color. The base is done in our "black over red" painted museum finish.
Until it is sold this table is available at a special price here with the 6 chairs shown. |
