The Principals Next Door
Dear Families,
This month of October brings a change in weather and in our school. Gone are those first week jitters. In their place, the understanding of school expectations. Gone are those 90 degree days. In their stead, the fall breeze and changes of the leaves. It is impressive how quickly our children have shifted from the heat and relaxed pace of the summer to the coolness and the work pace of school.
September saw many learning opportunities for our students. After reflecting on Patriot Day and Constitution Day, over 700 of us participated in the Palos Educational Foundation's Laps for Literature. Just last week the children participated in our PFA sponsored Safe Yourself - Inside & Out sessions, including personal safety, bike safety, self-defense, and bus safety. The main premise of this effort is to make students aware of the role they play in their own safety and well-being. We believe that it is vitally important that our children learn to make informed decisions when and where they are when adults may not be present. They are quite capable and responsible in many situations. Teachers have been busy scheduling a variety of field trips and our PFA continues to coordinate some excellent curriculum-supporting assemblies this year.
In the classrooms, teachers are moving ahead with reading, writing, and 'rithmetic as we pass mid-quarter. As we look forward to the end of quarter later this month, please be sure to plan on attending our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, November 8th and Wednesday, November 9th. If you have a particular request, be sure to complete the request form in this newsletter and return to your child's homeroom teacher no later than Thursday, October 6th. We will be scheduling during the afternoon of our School Improvement Days on Thursday, October 6th.
Please remember our Halloween festivities coming up on Monday, October 31st. We plan to begin our parade at 1:45 around the school - weather permitting - followed by classroom parties from 2:15 - 3:00. As parking is at a premium at Palos East, we ask you to please consider car-pooling. Parking is NOT available in our marked spaces for bus drivers only, as they arrive throughout the afternoon to run their routes. Also, do keep in mind our neighbors as your park and walk to school to help us in our celebrations.
Happy fall to one and all.
Most Sincerely,
Karen Mrozek Robert Meyer Principal Assistant Principal |

Character Code
with Mr. Robert Meyer
I would like to thank each and every one of you for making me feel so welcome and at home in District 118. I am extremely excited to be joining the Palos East team this year. Each person I have met has told me what a great place this district is and how wonderful the teachers and students are. I am confident in saying that every individual I have worked with so far has far exceeded that standard.
As we continue throughout the school year, I ask that you continue to remind students of our Character Code of being honest, respectful and responsible. We work with the students on a daily basis to reinforce the importance of meeting these three expectations in all school settings. Students who demonstrate these qualities may receive a Character Coupon from a staff member. These tickets are then used to choose students for a monthly reward, ranging from an extra recess period to building a snowman to free baseball tickets. This is a very important part of our curriculum, and we hope you will continue to support it at home! If you would be interested in volunteering to help with our monthly rewards, please contact the school office. |
