Greetings!
I'm thankful the warm weather and ocean temps are giving us an Indian summer, because it seems like it went by too fast. Fall is here with a furious schedule of upcoming events - and I invite you to join us!
Friday, September 21, 5:30 PM
Scripps Pier Tour and "Take Back the Beach" BBQ.
Please join us for a beautiful California sunset, a tour of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Pier, and a chance to meet Scripps scientists and students who currently use the pier for their research.
The Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is an important support facility for research and education activities, serving as a research platform and collection site for clean seawater, atmospheric and oceanic data and as a launching site for small boats. Since construction of the original pier in 1916, the pier has been a prominent landmark on the La Jolla coastline. We look forward to sharing access to the pier with you and your family.
The tour of the Scripps Pier will feature:
- Mike Buckingham, Professor of Ocean Acoustics
- Melissa Carter, Phytoplankton Researcher, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
- Christian McDonald, Diving Safety Officer, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
- Robin Modini, Postdoctoral Researcher, Climate, Atmospheric Science and Physical Oceanography (CASPO)
You're invited to join our surf club immediately following for a beach picnic/BBQ/potluck just north of the pier. We'll provide drinks, grill, and picnic supplies - you bring something to BBQ and a side dish to share. Please RSVP to lorraine@ljssa.org if you'd like to attend. Families and kids are welcome.
Hope to sea you soon at the Shores.
Lorraine Schmalenberger, President

Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series at Birch Aquarium
Monday, October 8 - Where the Swell Begins by Walter Munk, Scripps professor emeritus of geophysics
Every summer the California surfing community enjoys the arrival of a long regular swell from the southwest. The origin of the swell is in the winter storms of the southern hemisphere, some in the Indian Ocean, half way around the Earth. Join internationally renowned Scripps professor Walter Munk to learn how World War II and measurements of Guadalupe Island led to this discovery and what it means for surfers today. 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. @ Birch Aquarium, 2300 Expedition Way. Public is $8, Students $5, Members FREE. For more information and to register, click here. |

I can't wait for the northwest swell season to begin! Hope to catch some waves with you soon -
Sincerely,
Lorraine Schmalenberger, President, La Jolla Shores Surfing Association: lorraine@ljssa.org |
