Every year we go ALL OUT for our Annual Menehune Surf Contest and this year's contest 'season' has begun! Mark your calendars -
Saturday April 28 - and please consider joining our Contest Committee to help us plan and implement our best event ever! We need all of you to help us with sponsors, event planning, phoning, e-mails, and day of stuff - judging, BBQ, raffle, registration, tallying, and more..IF you would like to volunteer please contact either Stephanie Hoffman, our Contest Director, or Lorraine, and plan on attending our next surf club meeting WEDNESDAY, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. (location TBD) Click on the photo above of one of our amazing 2011 contestants to link to 5 min. video clip of our 2011 Contest produced by My Local Lineup.

Welcome Reef Victor Welch!
 There have been so many beautiful little baby girls being born into our La Jolla Shores Surfing community that we somehow forgot to 'officially' notice this little fella when he appeared magically (or so it seems)at our New Year's potluck in the arms of his beautiful mom Karen Welch (pictured above with Deborah and Ellianna Comisky). Let me issue a proper welcome to Reef Welch, born to parents Scott and Karen Welch, and proud big sis Olivia, pictured at right with her dad. Reef was born November 9, 2011 weighing in at 8 lbs, 13.5 ounces. I have a feeling with a name like Reef and two surfing parents, he'll be appearing in the not too distant future in our local lineup. He'll have to fight for waves with all the girls that precede him- Olivia, Kella, Ellianna, Sisilia, and McKenna. At least he'll have lots of girlfriends!!

Entry Forms for Menehune Surf Contest are now online!
We've issued the call and it's official: we're now accepting entry forms for our Annual Menehune Surf Contest. Click here to download a form or follow this link to our website where you may register online using PayPal. Rusty's Boardhouse, Mitch's, and SouthCoast (PB) will have entry forms as well. Our deadline is April 23, 2012. Hurry, because our 10% off early bird discount expires April 1. IF you're a member of a middle or high school surf team and you can get a group to enter with you (5 or more), we'll apply additional discounts. La Jolla Shores surf team places 7th overall in 2011

The Coalition of Surfing Clubs recently published the standings for 2011. We compete with and against 30+ surfing clubs up and down the west coast. Our surf team has been showing up at the big events, and slowly but surely working out way into and up the ranks of the top ten surf clubs. All our individual and team finishes at every Coalition event make a huge difference - and I thank all of you who have competed, camped, cooked, and been a part of the team. We've had a lot of fun along the way and everyone is invited in. Special shout outs go to Kevin and Michelle Connelly, our top MVPs, and to our new surf team captain Jeremy Bjork. Kudos also to Mike Dixon for all the great video footage, and to our surfing juniors - Ava and Annika Verbrugghen and Cameron Lapuaho for helping Lorraine staff our team paddle races! Pictured at left is Michelle Connelly, hanging five on her way to a 2nd place finish in the women's open longboard at Doheny's January event in Church's, just 3 months after delivering baby #2- now that's true grit! Surf Art Contest deadline extended until March 21
Annual Art Show at La Jolla Riford Library April 1 - May 15
La Jolla Shores Surfing Association has teamed up with the local art La Jolla Art Association to bring you our annual surf art contest. The grand prize winner will receive $100 and have his/her artwork adorn our event t-shirts. The top 40 entries will be exhibited at the La Jolla Riford Library during April & May. Artwork must be original and best illustrate our contest: kids surfing the Shores and having fun!! The deadline for art entries has been extended to WED. March 21. We can accept scanned original work (in black ink) via e-mail. The contest is open to all kids 18 & under. Please submit your original art to Art Contest CoordinatorLorraine Schmalenberger.
