Dear ,

I just got done watching the Chargers lose to the Raiders and it's hard to think of anything to cheer about.  Thank God tomorrow is Veterans Day and we can be thankful for the service and sacrifice of our war veterans, active military service members, and their families.  In the spirit of Veterans Day and to honor our own, we'll be celebrating the surfing veterans among us at our Annual Holiday party at the VFW hall this coming December 11, 2011.  Please save the date and we'll issue party details in our next issue.

It's the end of the year, and as the Coalition competitive season winds down, I urge you all to consider competing in the last event held at our break - La Jolla Shores, hosted by Windansea Surf Club over Thanksgiving.  We're gearing up for a great 2012 with our surf team, so IF you'd like to participate, let us know.

And, it's always fun to celebrate and take note of our own - we welcome new family members in the club - Makenna Connelly - while saying good-bye to others - the Dvir family, going back to Israel.

Finally, if you can get a hall pass, come join me this Saturday night at the Tiki House in P.B. to hear some rock bands featuring our friends at La Jolla Shores!    Hope to SEA you soon,

Lorraine Schmalenberger, President

Thanksgiving Weekend at La Jolla Shores

This picture sums it up for me - "Girls DO Wanna Have Fun" and these Menehune girls were hamming it up at the last Coalition event - the 2nd Annual Tourmaline Challenge this past October hosted by our friends at PB Surf Club and Cardiff. The surfing events are all about family and team, and yes, having fun. A few of our team membes turned in noteworthy performances including Stephanie Hoffman (2nd Sr. Women), and Yann Quilfen (3rd, SUP). Our paddle team came in 6th as did our overall surf team in the event - all finishes that matter when the final standings come out at the end of this year. We've got one more contest - hosted by Windansea Surf Club at La Jolla Shores - on Thanksgiving weekend Nov. 26 & 27. Signups are at Dave's truck. About that time, we'll also be taking sign-ups for the first Coalition event of 2012 - hosted by the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association at Church's on the weekend Jan. 7 & 8. To reserve a roster spot, please contact our surf team captain, Jeremy Bjork.

"Hay" and "Good-bye"   Hay Dvir leaving town for Israel

HayDvirSurfingOne of my favorite people to greet out surfing with a double "Hi" is Hay (pronounced "Hi") Dvir - a Shores Surfer whom you most likely have seen out short boarding over the past several years. I'm sad to say he and his family - which includes his surfing children Bar and Amit, are leaving us to go back to Israel. We'll miss you Hay - and let us know if you catch any waves in the Mediterranean! Hay wrote a good-bye message to all of us:

A year after we moved in San Diego (2004) from Israel I discovered surfing as the most passionate thing in my life. Exploring many of the spectacular breaks in San Diego, I eventually made the Shores my home break for the waves but mostly for its locals. This awesome community of La Jolla Shores embraced me and my family in their little piece of heaven, and we've had our most magical moments here at the Shores. EACH ONE OF YOU is now part of this magnificent memory of ours. Awesome things are not meant to last, and it's time for us to move back home to Israel December 1st to reunite with the rest of our family.  If you ever plan on surfing the Holy land don't hesitate to hit me up hay.dvir@gmail.com - just say you're from my home break.

WELCOME MAKENNA CONNELLY! MakennaConnelly

We're proud to officially welcome MaKenna Connelly to our tribe - born on September 23, 2011 to surfing parents Michelle and Kevin Connelly - she weighed in at 7lbs, 15 oz and 21inches in length. In several years, I'm predicting La Jolla Shores will be rockin' the Girls Menehune Division as MaKenna will be in good company with her big sis Kella and all the other surf team girls who are toddling for now...but watch out, here they come!

TikiBarNov12
Saturday, Nov. 12
There's a lot of talented people at La Jolla Shores, so it should be no surprise that we've got some musicians among us. Three bands featuring guys we know will be playing this Saturday November 12 at the Tiki House in Pacific Beach on 1152 Garnet Ave. starting at 6PM. Secondhand Smoke includes band members Greg Spaniol, Mike Blevins, and Tom Isbell; The Flounders features Kirk Ward, and joining them will be Arroyo with Jack Cassidy. This is a night of music and fun not to be missed.
You can sea that we've got lots going on,  and we invite all of you to join the surf club if you haven't already become a member.  Your dues help support our outreach, charity contributions, and special events.  Check out our website, or contact me if you would like to get involved with our surf club. It's easy to join - and I look forward to hearing from you and surfing with you!

Sincerely,
