It's Tradition...President's Message As I took to the water at the start of the Annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim at the Cove last weekend, I got to thinking about all the traditions we hold dear in our lives that define a place, a community, our lives. I've been doing the Rough Water since I was 11, and whether i'm in shape or not, there I am at the start with hundreds of others about to take the plunge...wondering "why?" My answer is simple...because that's what I've always done, and I love climbing out of the water of this 81 year old event, running through the finish line, and proudly claiming myself a survivor. (i'm in blue cap in water @ top of photo by Martha Everson)
There are days when I also wonder about why I would want to run a surf club. The answer is not as easy - but I hope that all of you will help me forge new traditions for our surf club as we all come together to take part in our many annual events - our picnic, our toy drive, our holiday party, our New Years Day potluck, our Menehune Contest, our beach cleanup, our surf team Coalition Contests.......and more.. As we begin each fall, it's time to create the agenda for the year ahead , and I invite all of you to help me create some new traditions we can be proud of years from now. This is your club, and I welcome your gifts of time, energy, and resources.

I'm certain this could be a "first" in my book - stopping to kiss while competing! I cherish the family tradition of this awesome surf contest sponsored by Malibu Board Riders.

TAKE BACK THE BEACH PICNIC!
 | |
photo by Martha Everson | Sunday, Sept. 18 @ 5PM - La Jolla Shores
It seems like summer never really got going - too little sunshine, cold water, ho-hum surf. I'm already yearning for the return of our northwest winter swells that bring back sizeable surf to the Shores. We're always looking for an excuse to party, so come join us as we celebrate the end of summer with other club members and friends.
ALL our welcome. We will provide a large grill, picnic supplies, drinks, and wood for the firepit. Please bring something to throw on the BBQ and a dish to share if you'd like. Family members and friends are welcome!
We'll be setup under our La Jolla Shores Surfing Association blue canopy near the fire pit in front of our gathering spot at the north end of La Jolla Shores beach somewhere between Towers 32 and 33. For information or details, contact Lorraine. |
ANNUAL MEETING & BOARD ELECTIONS La Jolla Brew House WED. Sept. 28 @ 6:30 P.M.
Please join us for our annual meeting and election of board officers on Wednesday, September 28 @ 6:30 pm at the La Jolla Brew House. We'll provide the pizza - all are welcome! (No-host drinks). Note, we'll also be accepting nominations for charities to receive proceeds from our 2011 Menehune Contest. We support charities that you, the members, support, and we're most proud of this tradition. We'll vote on the charities to receive our funding at the next club meeting in October, and all dues paying members will get a chance to vote. This is an important way you can make a difference in our community. Hope to see all of you there! For more information on our surf club, meetings, volunteer opportunities, surf team, or Board of Directors, please contact Lorraine, surf club President at 858.692.5235. |
GIVING BACK - San Diego Fire Station #9 You've seen these guys working out at the beach - and now you can donate to help support our local fire station. Please go online to make a donation - the giving campaign came out of a desire to improve the living conditions for our local first responders. With grave economic conditions facing the City and State, Station #9 will be taking on a wider greographic regions, and your donations helps our fire fighters be as ready, rested, and well equipped as possible. Please contact info@kindtonine.org for more information or click on logo at left to go their website. THANKS!

Help us fix beach access wheelchair!
We take much for granted, and for the most part, our City staff does all they can to keep our beaches clean and safe. Pictured at right is my good friend Amelia Open, a paraplegic swimmer, and her swim buddy Kim Berkshire on a summer swim outing. Thanks to all of you who have helped Amelia get in the ocean recently, as the beach access wheelchair has been unavailable due to broken parts, bad tires, etc. We'd like to keep this important resource working and serviceable - Please help us gather donations to FIX the chair. IF you'd like to help, make a check payable to "LJSSA" and we'll collect a fund to fix the chair with help from the City Park & Recreation Therapeutic Recreation Services: (619) 692-3866. Please write "BEACH WHEELCHAIR" in the memo line and drop off your check at Dave's truck. Our goal is to raise $500.

Welcome Sisilia Aloha Lapuaho! We welcome the newest member of our surfing family - Sisilia - born to parents Art and Bella Lapuaho on August 23, 2011, weighing in at 8lbs, 4.5 oz, and 20 1/4 in. in length.
With a middle name like "Aloha," i'm safely predicting that her surfing demeanor and approach to life will be much like the rest of the Lapuaho family and her surfing siblings Tatiana and Cameron! Hurry up and grow up Sisilia - we really need some more girls on our surf team!!
