Surf + Art Contest Grand Prize Winner Selected
La Jolla Riford Library to exhibit art show in April

GramdPrizeArtContest2011

Congratulations to Christian Gimber of La Jolla High School for being selected our grand prize winner of our surf art contest 2011!  Christian's work, pictured at left, will be featured on this year's 2011 Menehune contest t-shirts.  Christian also receives $100 as prize money.  The top 40 entries from area middle and high schools, will be on display at the La Jolla Riford Library and Youth Annex during April at 7555 Draper Avenue, La Jolla. Many thanks to all our participating schools, art teachers, and art students whose creativity inspired all of us!

In Christian's own words: "The idea behind this design was to capture the essence of surfing in a unique way.  Most surf art and photography glorifies perfect unbroken waves, crazy airs, and tube-riding, but I wanted to draw what surfing meant to me.  While most young surfers might not be able to air out or get in the tube, they can cutback, turn, and take advantage of a perfectly formed wave." Bravo Christian!

SPONSORS AND IN-KIND DONATIONS ARE MOST WELCOME!
La Jolla Shores donates our event proceeds to worthy charitable causes.  This year we were pleased to make donations to Friends of La Jolla Shores in support of the JJ the Whale life-sized bronze sculpture at the Children's playground to be installed before summer, Other local charities supported by LJSSA include  Sundt Memorial Foundation, Scripps Environmental Advocates in support of the Scripps Oceanographic Institute, City of San Diego Junior Lifeguard program in support of scholarships, and Life Rolls On, a foundation devoted to supporting young people affected by spinal cord injury.  This is all made possible through the generosity of our many sponsors who support the contest by donating cash, surfboards, and in kind donations.  ALL donations - surf related or not - (including gift certificates) are most welcome.  For more information, please contact our Contest Director, Stephanie Hoffman. We have sponsorship forms that can be downloaded form our website and are most appreciative of any gift.
CALLING ALL CONTEST VOLUNTEERS!

We depend on volunteers to help us host a successful contest - we've still got work to be done, so consider volunteering.  We use volunteers for everything - judging, tallying, registration, setup, cleanup, BBQ, raffle booth, and event promotion.  Please contact Stephanie Hoffman, Contest Director, if you can donate a few hours of your time: [email protected]

.

Be sure to check out our website for updates on all our sponsors who have donated cool raffle and silent auction items for the contest.  We hope to hear from you soon!
