Dear ,

2010GrandPrizeArtworkRecently, I had the honor of organizing a paddle out for a dear family member who lost her five year battle to cancer.  As we scattered some ashes at sea, I was reminded of how precious life is and how fortunate we are to have our beautiful stretch of coastline to surf, to love, and to give us solace when we are in need....I am a cancer survivor myself, and proud to support the efforts of the 17th Annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational to  raise awareness and much needed funds for cancer research.  We have two surf club members who will be honorary surfing members of the Pfizer "Team Thrivers:"  Phil Bimer and Dan Aughinbaugh.  Please go cheer them on and check out all the living surf legends that gather for this awesome annual event. Activities get underway @ 7AM at the Scripps Pier Sunday, August 22.

With love, from Lorraine

donate longboard to the UCSD Longboard Luau

KevinConnellySurfboard
Pictured above is LJSSA surf team rider and club member Kevin Connelly, with a unique custom board shaped and glassed for the Annual UCSD Longboard Luau event - the board will go in the live auction at the luau to support the cause.  Our surf club donated the materials and the custom glassing and surfboard shape was donated by Magic Plastics Unlimited and Kevin Connelly Surfboards - owned and operated by Kevin and Michelle Connelly.  It's a 9'3" Noosa 3 Model with rounded square tail and lighter glassing than his Noosa 2 model.  The art design is a collaboration between Kevin and Christopher Oleata of a natural scene in Bird Rock, La Jolla. Many thanks to the Connellys for their donation to this event!
Richard and Deborah welcome baby girl
Elliana ComiskeyEllianna Grace Comiskey was born August 11, 2010 to parents and surf club members Deborah and Richard Comiskey, weighing in at 6lbs 10oz.  I'm pretty sure that our Menehune Girls division of our surf team will be ripping in about 10 years with the addition of this little girl to our surfing family.  Welcome Ellianna, we can hardly wait to meet you!

Take Back the Beach Picnic Sun. Sept. 26
 HappyDave
Why is Dave smiling?  Because summer will be over soon and the tourists will be leaving. We'll 'take back the beach' and look forward to the return of our winter northwest swell, bigger waves, and fewer stingrays!  Come join Dave and others as we host our annual picnic on the beach/boardwalk the evening of Sunday, September 26 starting at 5pm in the vicinity of Dave's truck, at the fire pit between Tower 32 & 33 on the beach.  Bring a dish to share - we'll have BBQs set up, our blue LJSSA canopy, drinks, and picnic supplies.  Let's get happy and celebrate the end of summer.  You and your friends are all invited! For more info, contact our party director, Phil Bimer @ 858.395.4264

It's that time of the year....
Summer Sunset

At the end of every summer, we ask all of you to support the club by joining as members and paying dues once a year - your dues help us carry on the critical activities at the heart of our club:  our Annual Menehune Surf Contest, our beach cleanups, our get togethers, our Coalition surf team, and charitable outreach...we've established a great tradition at La Jolla Shores, and we invite you to become a part of our club.  Refer a friend who signs up, and Pete Z. will get you a new club t-shirt. (Pete, get those shirts ordered!).  So, when you get your dues notices, don't sing the blues, just pay 'em! Dave has applications at his truck and they can also be downloaded from our website: www.ljssa.org
There's lots going on this month and next - and we invite you to get involved.  We appreciate your support, and if you'd like more information about our surf club or any of our activities, don't hesitate to call or e-mail me!

Sincerely,
