10th Annual Menehune Surf Contest
Greetings!
Welcome to our first electronic issue of The Shorerider. In an effort to save paper and time, we will be discontinuing our print issue. It's that time of year - we've begun gearing up for our Annual Menehune Surf Contest Saturday, April 17, 2010 at La Jolla Shores. Event applications will be available by March 1 from our website. If you'd like to volunteer at our event, please contact Contest Director Stephanie Hoffman: stephanie@ljssa.org and please know that you're invited to attend our next event planning meeting February 24 at the La Jolla Recreations Center, 6:30 p.m.

YOUTH ART CONTEST IS ON!
DEADLINE MARCH 5, 2010
Every year in the months before our surf contest, we sponsor an art contest for area school kids age 18 and under. We're looking for that special original surf-inspired drawing to be featured on our event t-shirts. This year, we're welcoming back art contest sponsor ando and friends. $100 goes to the grand prize winner and other cool prizes to our top five entries. All the top entries from area schools will be on exhibit at the Jacobs Youth Annex of the La Jolla Riford Library during April. If you'd like to pick up some flyers to take to your school's art teacher, please contact lorraine@ljssa.org or 858.692.5235. PHILANTHROPY : LJSSA supporting worthy causesThanks to support from our members and the local community through our Menehune Contest event proceeds, we have donated over $10,000 to many worthy charities over the past three years. Our 2009 charitable recipients, voted on by our members, were:Door of Faith Orphanage: providing the best home possible to the children entrusted to their care in Baja, Mexico
Friends of La Jolla Shores: installing JJ the Whale life-sized bronze sculpture next fall in Kellogg Park playground (see picture below)
San Diego Coastkeeper: protecting the region's bays, beaches, watersheds and ocean for the people and wildlife that depend on them
Sundt Memorial Foundation: Inspiring kids to Live Their Natural High and Reject Drugs
Surfaid International: improving the health, well being, and self-reliance of people living in isolated communities connected to us through surfing.

We'd like to encourage everyone to sign up EARLY for our 10th Annual Menehune Contest on April 17, 2010. This year, we're offering an early bird discount of 10% for contestants who turn in their entries by April 1: $5 off the one division entry fee of $55, and $10 off the two division entry fee of $80 for shortboard and longboard. Event Applications will be available online by March 1, 2010.
