 Kelmann Cares

April 2010

Hello Friends of Kelmann,
Spring has sprung. This is always a great time of year. We are finally starting to get outside after months of being shut in. It's also the time when storms roll though and create havoc. Massive rains in the past years have caused a real mess in Wisconsin. With that in mind, we have an article below that might help you from becoming a storm victim.
We also have some information on new marketing events that Kelmann is planning for this summer. Cool stuff for sure. So, grab a lemonade and take a look at what's going on at Kelmann.

The Kelmann Cookout Care-A-Van
Cook out Caravan   This spring and summer we will be visiting several insurance agencies throughout the area with the Kelmann Cookout Care-A-Van.  This will be an opportunity for insurance professionals to take a close look at our emergency capabilities.  We will have some of our emergency vehicles and equipment on display in the parking lot of the agency.  We will also be having a cookout for the staff.  We will be showing off a bit for the folks as well as putting on a nice spread of brats, Italians and chicken sandwiches. (Kelmann Cares....Kelmann Cookout Care-A-Van... Could we possibly be more clever?) We are really looking forward to this as it should be a lot of fun.  See our website this summer for pictures and more information.

Mold Isn't a Problem...
Mold wall  Make that statement to an insurance professional and the response you receive may seem a bit harsh. The fact is, mold is never the problem with regard to building and structure. It is merely the symptom. The problem is always moisture. Alleviate the water source and you will remove the cause of the mold. Simply put, without a water problem, you won't have a mold problem.

Here is what happens in buildings with mold problems:
  • A moisture source goes unchecked.
  • That moisture impacts an organic material, such as drywall paper or wood.
  • Over time moisture on organic material leads to mold. Nature does what it is supposed to do.
If mold impacts building and structure, professional remediation may be in order. The professional remediation contractor's goal is to clean and remove the mold from impacted materials. "Magical" sprays, chemicals and treatments are not part of a true professional's tools. Correct the moisture problem and safely clean and remove the mold.  That's the basic principle of mold remediation.
Tips to Help Prevent Basement Flooding
  • Flood Cartoon Make sure gutters and downspouts are clean and clear of obstruction.
  • Downspouts should direct water at least 6 feet away from the foundation.
  • Make sure grade slopes away from the foundation.  Land tends to settle over time and may slope inward toward the house.  It is a good idea to check lot grading annually.
  • Trim dense shrubs and plants next to the foundation so the soil is exposed to sunlight and is allowed to dry as quickly as possible.
  • Make sure garden borders, debris or mulch do not create a condition that holds surface water up next to the foundation.
  • Install clear plastic domes over window wells.
  • Make sure the sump pump is plugged in and working.  It is a good idea to have a battery back-up in case of a power failure.
  • Make sure interior drains are clear.
