FEAST of Sts. MARIAN & JAMES
| Born in North Africa, Marian was a lector ; James was a deacon. For their devotion to the faith they suffered during the persecution of Valerian. Prior to their persecution Marian and James were visited by two bishops who encouraged them in the faith not long before they themselves were martyred. Marian and James were later arrested and readily confessed their faith and, for that, were tortured. On the last day of their lives, Marian and James joined other Christians facing martyrdom. They were blindfolded and then put to death. Their bodies were thrown into the water. The year was 259. |

Orders must be placed no later than June 11th.Book orders may be picked up on Wednesday, June 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or on Thursday, June 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Language Lab located in the Scholl Center. Cash or checks accepted.If we are unable to completely fill your book order, you have two options: 1) you may purchase needed books through an on-line bookstore, or 2) Marquette's bookstore will be open Wednesday, August 11th and Thursday, August 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Once school begins, the bookstore will be open 7:30 a.m. until the start of school and then from 2:40 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Prom 2010 is planned for May 8th at The Allure in La Porte, Indiana.

Youth Day of Caring 2010
We are closing in on
the end of the school year and it's time to recruit our High School teams for
this year's Youth Day of Caring that will be held on Saturday morning, August
28, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until Noon. The event will be held at the Indiana Lakeshore
again and we are adding projects at the Dunes State Park , as well. Right now we
are looking for team commitments with a team contact (with their contact info of
choice-text their cell phone or send an email). This captain can recruit their
team members after they agree to participate or let us know now how many will be
on their team. We will connect with the team leader, later, to get the t-shirt
sizes needed for their team.
This year we are "raising the bar" hoping to engage more than the 300 volunteers that participated last year. YOU can be a Youth Day of Caring Champion. Click here or more information.

Save the Dunes
The Shirley Heinze Land Trust and Save the Dunes will be holding a volunteer workday this Saturday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Barker Woods Nature Preserve in Michigan City. Duties include pulling Garlic Mustard and controlling burning bush in the nature preserve and doing some house cleaning and yard work around Barker house. Please bring work gloves. Lunch will be provided at noon. Please RSVP 219/879-4725.

The Gift of Mental Illness
 Everything I Ever Wanted to Know... I Learned Being Mentally Ill, and everyone is... at least a little, will be presented Saturday, May 15 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Sinai Temple Auditorium, 2800 N. Franklin Street, Michigan City.

Indiana University - Advance College ProjectStudents taking Indiana University-Advance College Project courses next school year are reminded that application forms are due in to the Office of Academic Affairs by May 14th. One form is to be completed for each semester class. See Mrs. Mark for an application or more information.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Please note the Tom Lernihan Scholarship is now available. (click here to download the application.) This is only for Marquette students, so we encourage all seniors to apply.
Michigan City Firefighters Local 475 Scholarship applications are now available from the Office of Academic Affairs. A minimum 2.0 GPA is required. The student is to write a two-page essay entitled "Why I Want To Attend College". Essay scores and personal interview will determine the winners. Top prize is $750.00, second place is $500 and third place is $250. Applications must be submitted to Mrs. Mark by May 18th.
Applications are now available for Michigan City Scholarship Foundation scholarships. Applications are available in the Academic Affairs Office. Applications are also available for students currently attending college.
Applications for the Michigan City Human Rights Scholarship are now available in the Office of Academic Affairs. The essay topic is "What Are Human Rights"? Applications must be submitted to Mrs. Mark by May 10, 2010.
Members Advantage Credit Union is offering the Gail Walker Scholarship. Applications are available on their web-site: Members Advantage.
Check on your Financial Aid (FAFSA) status: Students/Parents should visit State Student Assistance Commission to check the status of their FAFSA for state aid purposes. They will see a red stop sign if there are any issues preventing them from receiving state aid. They can click the text next to the stop sign to learn how to correct these issues (if correctable). Students with a green go sign have no current issues with their FAFSA. Students should periodically check this site between now and May 15th to insure there are no issues that will prevent them from receiving state aid. Grant award notifications will be posted to the above link in June.

ECA ExamsAlgebra Exam: 05/11/10 through 5/12/10(morning) The Algebra exam is for students who are currently in Algebra I who have not previously passed the exam.
English Exam: 05/13/10 through 05/14/10 (afternoon) All current sophomores. Biology Exam: 05/11/10 through 05/12/10 (afternoon) All current Biology I students.
AP ExamsOn Monday, May 10th, the Physics AP Exam will be given in Room 201. Students are to report to Room 201 (2nd floor Resource Room) at 11:45 a.m. Testing will begin promptly at noon as required. These students will be excused for early lunch at 11:20 due to the time restrictions. Testing time is 3 hours plus instruction. We hope to be done by 3:15 p.m.
The cost of the exam will be covered by the Indiana Department of Education. However, the school will be charged a fee for any unused exams. That fee will be passed on to students who are not in attendance for the exam.

We would like to provide you with information regarding Summer School opportunities. These courses, taught online, may benefit students for a variety of reasons. One program is called Indiana Virtual Academy. Registration will begin April 12, 2010. Students may register online at Indiana Virtual Academy. Summer school will begin on June 14 and end August 6. More detailed information will be posted at their website soon. Cost is $175.00 per semester course. Another option is Indiana University High School. Please check their website: IU High School Registration forms can be downloaded. Costs vary. Learning guides and textbooks are additional. Marquette Catholic High School will award credit for the courses taken. However, the grades received will not replace the original grade, nor will the new grade be calculated into the student's cumulative grade point average.If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Mark in the Office of Academic Affairs.

 All Marquette students are expected to complete 25 hours of community service at Marquette Catholic High School. Hours must be completed by May 1, 2010. Evidence and/or documentation of the experiences are turned in directly to the school office when the student completed the total requirement. Opportunities for approved service projects may be found at nwivolunteer.org. All projects must be pre-approved in writing (email is acceptable) by Mr. White.
Fall 2010: The Service Design Team will be releasing newly adopted service procedures and portfolio requirements. All students will be expected to complete a cumulative portfolio outlining their service work during their high school years. The portfolio offers students a structured presentation for college entrance interviews. (Service Learning Portfolio & Service Learning Verification)

Bullying is a critical issue facing students today with approximately 864,000 teens staying home one day a month because they fear for their safety. Bullying too often leads to violence, loss of self-esteem and even depression. Attend this very worthwhile program Monday, May 10, 2010 at 6:00 p.m., in the Scholl Center at Marquette High School.
