PRESIDENTS CORNER by Rick Ludwig, President |
|
We have had a great start to this 2009-2010 ski season at Ausblick. Here is some information on our membership levels and our finances. Our 2009-2010 membership total is 392, compared to 372 last year. Sixty members from 2008-2009 did not return for 2009-2010. Our current waiting list total is 158. During calendar year 2009, we added 78 to our waiting list, compared to 71 added for calendar year 2008 and 74 added for calendar year 2007. Our finances continue to be very strong. As of 12/31/09 our total revenues were 98.99% of our total budgeted revenues for the 2009-2010 fiscal year and 5.2% above last year at 12/31/08. Also, as of 12/31/09, our total expenses were only 33.79% of our total budgeted expenses for our 2009-2010 fiscal year and 7.1% less than last year at 12/31/08. Ausblick's fiscal year ends on June 30th. I hope this information helps you feel secure that your club, Ausblick, continues to be very strong. I encourage all of you to continue to check our website, www.ausblick.org for all current operations and events information. In closing, I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the 2009 - 2010 ski season. Even when there is no snow left in your yard, we will have the best spring skiing conditions of any ski hill in the area, so keep coming to Ausblick. |
MANAGERS MESSAGE by Dennis Evinrude, General Manager |
From the Desk of Dennis...
I hope you are enjoying the season and if you are a new member this year I welcome you again. The hill is currently 100% open thanks to over 8 million gallons of water that has been processed by our snow guns. The weather has not caused any scheduled ski days to be missed. Hopefully we can get through January without any rain.
A number of members have had questions about our chairlift subsequent to the rollback incident at Devils Head Ski Area. Our lift is the same manufacture and general design as the one involved at Devils Head. Here is a brief summary of the incident. A failure of the transmission precipitated a rollback which would then require the emergency brake and the "back stop bars" to engage and bring the lift to a halt. Both of those items appear to have failed in the Devils Head case. I can assure you that we test these items frequently and they are in good working order. Additionally, our lift features a device that automatically engages the emergency brake should the lift travel backwards as little as 18 inches. Early reports seem to indicate that this feature was not installed on the Devils Head lift. Please feel free to ask me questions personally should you desire more detailed information.
I have a few reminders for you based on observations I have made this season. They mostly address how you use "your lodge". I emphasize "your lodge" because I want you to think of this facility as though it were your vacation home up north or a condo you might utilize in some sunny climate. In the kitchen we have signs that ask you to wash, dry, and put away food preparation tools such as knives and pizza cutters. We ask you to do this simple chore so the next person does not have to wash your dishes to perform his or her task. We provide towels for drying the dishes as well as table cleanup. We ask that you use them, launder them at home and return them to the hill. So far this season I have watched over 50 towels disappear. One alternative is to remove the amenities from the kitchen which would necessitate your bringing them from home. We would prefer not to undertake that measure. Please treat the kitchen as you would at home. In the main body of the lodge I have observed that the concept of sharing tables on busy days is just not resonating with you. On Wednesday night, January 15th, we had a number of groups that pulled together 3 and 4 tables with them being largely unattended for a majority of the evening. I understand that it was a great evening to be outside but I still saw instances where one table in a group was used solely to park food baskets and what appeared to be a portable bar. There are other ways to store and utilize those items without occupying a table that another member could use. Please be considerate of your fellow member and their desire to enjoy the ambiance of our beautiful lodge also. On busy days I will be asking people to share table space and I hope you will respect our need to do this.
Elsewhere in this newsletter you will read about a number of safety issues occurring on the slopes. Management will be stepping up enforcement and will not hesitate to suspend the skiing/snowboarding privileges. One of the issues has been skiing close to Instructors as they are giving a lesson. Our Instructors are very visible as they all wear Yellow/Black uniforms. Please react to the Yellow as you would to the Yellow lights of a Tow Truck at the side of the road. We slow down and steer clear of the situation. A little bit of common sense goes a long way. In closing I want to stress that the above issues are the result of a small minority of members. By and large, this club consists of thoughtful members who use the facility respectfully. I am grateful for that majority.
Respectfully Yours, Dennis Evinrude, G.M.

SKI PATROL ROOM by Bob Turowski, Board Member and Past Patrol Director |
The Ausblick Ski Patrol would like to bring to your attention a problem we appear to be having this season. Complaints involve Ski Instructors being clipped while giving instructions on the hill, skiers & boarders bombing the Main Run and skiing into the "Slow Zone" at a high rate of speed, often followed by a hockey stop to spray individuals. Additionally, we have been finding tracks through the wooded area between runs and for the first time in all my tenure at Ausblick, I have received complaints by hill staff that bamboo poles are being removed from closed areas, so access to the area could be considered "open" for skiing. The Ausblick Board of Directors and the Ski Patrol consider the above to be very unsafe skiing practices. Skiing into a closed off area or between runs is dangerous because of snowmaking hoses and piping lying under the snow. Hockey stops in the "Slow Zone" presents the opportunity for a skier to fall and crash into other skiers and removing bamboo from closed off areas is potentially endangering yourself and anyone else who may enter the area unknowingly. We ask everyone to remind family members to abide by "safe" skiing/snowboarding practices. Guests brought out to the club should also be informed of Ausblick's expectations. For now, the Ski Patrol, Ski Instructors and Hill Management will be monitoring the activities on the hill and speaking to those who may continue to ski in an unsafe manner. Please understand that our intention is to prevent a potential accident on the hill, not simply reprimand a member or guest. I'm confident most conversations will remedy our concerns, however be advised that repeat offenders may have their pass marked by hill management as a final warning. A repeat incident may result in confiscation of one's pass for the remainder of the season. Ausblick has just about the lowest number of annual accidents that you'll find in the state. Much of the credit goes to our Hill Management for our impeccable ski conditions, along with due credit to our Ski Instructors and Membership who use their services to become accomplished skiers. Unfortunately, at this point we may be faced with a few over-confident skiers, who may not be thinking past the end of their skis while on the hill. Don't feel bad about personally asking them to "ski safer", we won't. On behalf of the Ausblick Ski Patrol, Ski School and Hill Management, We thank you in advance for your co-operation, Bob Turowski Ski Patroller Ausblick Board Member Ski Patrol Board Member

RACE TEAM ACTION |
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR UNDERWAY
The Ausblick Race Team kicked off the WJR season with a HUGE win on our home course. It was a beautiful day with over 300 racers in attendance. Thank you to all Ausblick Members for their cooperation as we host this popular event. It was another great race for the Ausblick Team this past Saturday at Sunburst! Our team won both 5&6 Class races, and the 1-4 Class races.
Congratulations to Sydney Rogers and Jack Bourdo. They will be heading to Vail 12/30-1/3 to race in the Topolina Time Trials. This is the top 18, J3 boys and girls in all of Rocky/Central.
The Ausblick Ski Race team is an alpine ski racing organization that gives young people the opportunity to develop their athletic abilities while fostering self-confidence, sportsmanship, teamwork and competitive spirit. The team is 140 athletes strong with varying levels of involvement and competition. Successes range from beginning racers finishing their first official race, to determined athletes reaching a personal goal, to accomplished athletes competing in high profile national and international events. BUILDING UPDATE by Jim Siepmann, Chairman of Building Oversight Committee |
Update on the New Maintenance and Snowmaking Equipment Building
Construction of the new building is anticipated to start in early spring when the ski season is over. Final building permits and financing details delayed a fall construction start. If all goes as planned, the building should be completed fall of 2010 for use next ski season. Emphasizing the need for a new building, the roof of the old building, housing our new snowcat, partially collapsed from snow load last month. Thankfully our new snowcat was not parked in the building at the time and was not damaged.
