Message from the Principal
"The Ball is Rolling..."
The school year is definitely rolling along. I have been so impressed and excited to be welcomed as I have into this community, and have enjoyed meeting new people all the time. One of my favorite things about being Principal at CLHS is the opportunity to interact with so many people that have such a connection to this place. God is good to us, and continues to lead and guide us each and every day.
One of the more interesting times of a school year, in my opinion, is the start. Each year, we come together to get things in place, make schedules, prepare classrooms, get fields ready, order supplies, the list goes on and on. The neat thing is that even in a school that has over 75 years of history behind it, we still begin "anew" each year! We have to "get the ball rolling" each time. No year is exactly the same, and the makeup of students, faculty and staff differs every year. Add new iPads and a brand new Principal into the mix and the change can seem overwhelming!
New starts can be refreshing, but they can also bring about fear. Having the task of starting new and getting things moving can be a challenge and can cause uncertainty among people. However, we at CLHS look at it through a much different lens! You see, the initial push for us is one of faith, it is one of trust and hope in God's promises that allows us to move the ball along and keep things running smoothly. We serve a God who loves us so much that he sent his Son to live perfectly and die for us...what an awesome gift!
In leading a school of our size, with so many working parts, it is such a comfort to know that God is the push behind getting and keeping the ball rolling. He is the force behind what we do and who we are. Even if we don't feel the strength to keep pushing, or know exactly the direction that ball is supposed to go, we have God's timeless promise that he will be there to help.
God's blessings to you as the ball rolls along in your life...and remember he is there to offer strength and guidance, and will always do so!
GO CADETS!

Got Milk?
What am I supposed to do? My family is sick, everyone I work with is sick; I don't have time to be sick!
I have heard this mantra a lot in the past few weeks, even though it is just now fall. I have no idea what this winter may hold for us in terms of viruses and flu.
Of course, my first suggestion is to get a flu shot. I have other suggestions that follow: wash your hands well and often, stay home when you are sick, and cough into your elbows. It is impossible to not come into contact with viruses in spite of our best precautions. So...
Wash your hands! It is the easiest, cheapest and most effective way to keep you well. Studies show that less than half of the people in this country wash their hands after they go to the bathroom. Besides being disgusting, we touch everything that those people touch. With effective hand washing, we can eliminate approximately 96% of the viruses we come into contact with that make us ill. It really is that simple!
When washing your hands, use warm water (not hot or cold), use regular soap (special anti-bacterial soap is not necessary), lots of friction, and for at least 40-50 seconds--enough time to sing Jesus Loves Me or count to 20 in German or make that grocery list in your head--rinse all that stuff you loosened up down the drain and dry with a paper towel. Use that same paper towel (yes, you left the water on) to turn off the faucets and open that bathroom door. Throw away the paper towel after you exit a public restroom. At home, change out hand towels (and bath towels) every day--they begin to grow bacteria the first time they are used.
Talk with your teenager about washing hands--they hear it from me every day. Stay well so that you may enjoy the beauty that is fall.

CLHS Drama Season Opens in This Weekend
Concordia Lutheran High School opens its drama season with The Diary of Anne Frank, an impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic. The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence--their fear, hope, laughter, and grief.
This show, directed by Chris Murphy, will be staged in the CLHS auditorium. Show times are Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 7 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students in high school or younger.
Also in October, Concordia Lutheran High School presents Comedy Tonight, three one act plays. Shows include "The Diary of Adam and Eve," directed by Sonya Eggold. Adapted from the story by Mark Twain, this show takes a humorous look at the challenges of being the first couple. Abbey Stombaugh will direct "Visitor from Forest Hills," a Neil Simon comedy about a husband and wife who cannot get their daughter out of the Plaza Hotel bathroom to get married. The final one act, "Check, Please," will be directed by Matt Christian and Reagan Dewell. It follows a series of blind dinner dates that couldn't get any worse--until they do.
Show time is Sunday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the CLHS auditorium. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
Theatre schedule brochures are available at the main office during regular school hours. You can also support Concordia Theatre by becoming a Drama Patron at the Maroon, Gold, Silver, or Bronze levels. For more information, please contact the CLHS Drama Department at (260) 483-1102. |
